Would you run an oil bath air breather?
My 67 came stock with a oil bath breather and 327. My build is completely 67 72 era parts only.this truck will not drive often just to cruise around. I have read all the pros and cons of these. Want to keep the stock look. What would you do.

The older I get the more I tend to stay stock with what the truck came with, I just appreciate them more than a modified, I enjoyed that in my early 20's before children, now I just want to preserve and make them last. Nuttin wrong with an oil bath!!!

I had a 61 Gmc 3500 that had one on a 305 V6. No problems ever and the oil always got filthy between changes so it must work good. Also had them on old school air cooled VW bugs, again worked great.

There was nothing wrong with them back then so I would clean it up and use it.
I can't say I've ever been too a car show and seen one on this generation of truck I dont even know anyone who still uses one. I don't know much about them but I don't think there was anything wrong with them then so I don't see anything wrong with them now. Besides you truck was made with it why not leave it be. I have one also not gen correct but I still may use it to be differnt.

The only reason I would run one is for originality. The paper cartridge filter cleans better & is less restrictive. The paper filter was developed for dirt track racing & shortly after was adapted by all the car cos.

Nothing wrong with an oil bath air cleaner for a cruiser. Just like drum brakes are to disc brakes.

Here are pictures of the one I restored. I have 2. You fill the base up with oil to the oil level. The air travels up thru the air cleaner lid and then drops suddenly. Then goes back up thru the mesh in the circular holes. As it goes up supposedly gravity makes the dirt particles fall into the oil.

This is my other one. Same thing except this one has a removable plastic liner thar would make it easier to clean out the dirty oil. I was going to make this one accept a paper filter but I might not.

So i did a little research as i have no experience with oil baths and i like to learn. From what i was reading on a forum of a bunch of guys restoring pre 1940s cars they say the oil baths dont work well at low cruising RPM's . The reason behind this is that the air velocity is to low at low RPM and small particles dust bugs what have you can actually make the 180 degree turn and end up in your intake and carb. Turns out its not just gravity doing the work of cleaning the air. Air velocity plays a large part. At a high rpm the particles in the air have to much velocity to make the turn and end up in the oil bath . (pretty intuitive when you think about it) . Apparently another downfall to the oil bath is over time you accumulate oil vapor in your carburetor intake and intake runners of the heads. This oil vapor is enough to stick to the walls and build up over time lowering your octane rating on your intake charge because the fuel is now mixing with air, oil, and oil vapor.
