Engine ID isn't clear cut

I just purchased a '68 K10 Chevy and the SPID doesn't mention having a V8, but the truck does. Everything looks factory but someone might have put a V8 in it a long time ago.

The engine has an oil fill tube and the head numbers are 3911032 which come back as 307/327. It is a 2bbl engine so all things would point to a 307 but the machined pad on the passenger side doesn't have the typical ID marks (see pics). The block is covered in grime and I can't get to the back of the block to look at the casting numbers.

Any help?

What are the 3 letters on the pad in front of the ps head. Might have to move the fuel line out of the way to see them

The second picture is of the pad in front of the PS cylinder head. No letters just the numbers 43358.

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut

There is nothing besides those numbers, I scrubbed the pad thinking it might have some light stamping marks, but nothing

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut

Factory installed the 307 as standard on V8 trucks. Any other engine (327 or 396) would be listed on the spid.

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut

Look at your VIN# and your spid MOD#

On the VIN# the 3rd letter in E=8cyl, S=6cyl.
On your MOD# it's the 2nd letter in.

This will at least tell you if it came originaly with a 6 or and 8cyl.

I believe this is correct, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me... "LOL"

Re: Engine ID isn't clear cut

Cheers,
