454SS as a work truck?
Bit of a strange question here. I've recently been reading a lot about late 80s and early 90s sport trucks. My jumping off point was Jay Leno's GMC Syclone, whoch, while very cool, appears to be more of a sports car first and truck second with its meager hauling abilities. Nobody in their right mind would use a Syclone to move a half ton of Sheetrock around town.
But a 454SS? I don't know...it seems more likely. The 454SS seems more truck like, am I correct in that? Has anyone done any real work in one? What's your experience been?

Re: 454SS as a work truck?
The main problem I had with a 454SS is....only two seats.
Buckets seats look cool but if anybody (more than a passenger) wants to go with you they have to take another vehicle. Other than that it has the same advantages and disadvantages of any GMT400 short box pickup. K

Sure you can, but you'll end up wearing the thing out. They are worth too much to wear out these days.

Re: 454SS as a work truck?
Back when they were new/newish I knew a couple guys who were using them as D.D./work trucks at construction/industrial sites. Hauling lumber and gravel, through mud and doing and everything a truck was supposed to do.
Nowadays, everyone gets uptight about getting their truck dirty... |

Keith speaks wise words, but other than that being a work truck doesn't always mean you beat the heck out of it. There is a great chance you'll pick up some dings and all on what is considered a special truck, but they were made to be used. As my mentor said, Use it, enjoy it. If you ding it, that is what a hammer and paint is for."

Re: 454SS as a work truck?
There is a difference if an owner that respects his truck uses it for work as opposed to an employee using a truck for work. I don't have a rare truck but I do use it for work and take extra effort not to damage my truck while loading .

Re: 454SS as a work truck?
454 SS trucks got lousy fuel mileage.
I would look for the Sport Truck version with a 5.7liter or just a clean 88-98 swb.

Re: 454SS as a work truck?
My 93 Indy truck just came home from the bodyshop on Friday from having some areas repainted due to clear coat peeling ,(cab, hood ans R fender) and looks nice but I still use it as a truck .It has a factory bedliner in it so Im not afraid to haul stuff .
