Spark Plug Question(s)

With the exception of a mild RV cam and a HEI distributor, my SB Gen1 350 is completely stock.
I decided that after 50,000 miles it was about time to replace the plugs. The thing I immediately noticed was that they are burning very lean. The plugs are AC Delco R44TS.
I was wondering if I should go with a shorter tip R44T or maybe a colder R43TS.
Other than the lean condition, the engine runs great and doesn't ping under any condition.

Re: Spark Plug Question(s)

The last time I checked I think I switched from R44 plugs over to R45TS plugs....no problems.
To my understanding the R45 is a slightly 'hotter' plug than the R44 which I believe makes it better for short haul, stop and go stuff. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this....)
Both fit fine and work fine....just different duty cycles and applications.

Re: Spark Plug Question(s)

I use the R45ts, and have tried the 44's. The lean condition is tied to the carb. I like the hotter plug for economy and complete burn as I use about 1 quart of oil every 3,000 miles.

You could also go with the R45 which is a colder plug than the TS (Tapered Seat) and the most likely manufacture a R44 also.

Take a look at them side by side next time you are in the auto parts store.

100 ways to burn, pick your poison for your set up. I have an Eddy carb, Stock Hei with Pertronix Module and Accel Super Coil sitting on top. I have found todays E10 Likes a hotter spark.

Pretty stock here otherwise.

Re: Spark Plug Question(s)

R45TS for me, I was running too lean and I changed my 600 Holley jets from a factory #66 to #69 and might could go a #70 but it runs pretty darn good where it's at...Ed

Re: Spark Plug Question(s)

Also, when running an HEI ignition, open the plug gaps to at least a minimum of .045
