Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
Found this little gem in Iowa out in the middle of the timber. It was on Craigslist and advertised as being in Nebraska, I called the phone number from the ad which was in California , owner said it was no longer for sale... Got to talking to him and it seems he had a body shop do a repaint of the exterior in which he was not happy with so he said he was just going to let it sit. He didn't even realize it was still on Craigslist or how much his girlfriend advertised it for.
I ended up making a deal with him and drove to Iowa the next day to see it at his brothers place, after a pretty good hike thru the mud and timber I couldn't believe how nice it was. Can't find any rust on her anywhere, 80,000 miles 1970 GMC Custom Camper 3500. Made the deal and went back to get it after the ground had a chance to dry up. It made the trip back home with no problems, runs great and the motor is as smooth running as I've ever had, ran the suffex code on it and it's a 1974 400 so it's been replaced, all else seems to be factory correct. As far as I can tell it has a TH475 trans with the HO72 rear.

Ad from Nebraska, in Iowa woods, called California, not for sale, bought it... Ok, I understand
Was it a Longhorn or is it a cab & chassis?

It came frome the factory as a single wheel 157" wheel base 3500 Custom Camper. When these guys got it it had been converted to a dually by way of some kind of aftermarket adapters. They switched it back to single wheel. I sure wish it had had the R05 dual wheel conversion from the factory so it would have gotten cab lights! But oh well I can ad my own.

Re: Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
Thanks Joe! Do you know if they used the Th475 in these trucks back in 1970? It has the HD cast into the case for Heavy Duty, no Park, bolt on rear yoke and the distinct 1st gear whine you get from a 475

Re: Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
Not sure yet Jerry, I was really looking for a 133" 1 ton when I found this, not sure if I want to go thru the trouble of shortening the frame or not. I want to run a 9' or 10' stake bed but am afraid of it not looking right on the 155" WB

Re: Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
OH! It's a 157" WB? I don't think I've ever known of a single rear one before, or didn't notice when I saw one. So it was a frame-mount camper? It would be nice to custom-build a camper back on there. I had that gold '70 Custom Camper/30 157" DRW with automatic. No park and just assumed it was a TH400

Re: Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
That a good looking truck.
What's wrong with the paint that the po wasn't happy with? I found this c50 in a local jy. Posted the spid pics over in heavy haulers. Allison trans is listed on the spid. So perhaps it could have one of these in it. I didn't know she existed back then

I have a bunch of pics of this truck before paint and they all show how solid it was. It still has original rockers and all floor supports are like new. The body shop didn't do a very good job of taping it off, overspray here and there but it will clean up. Here's a pic before paint

Re: Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
That's a rather odd story, very odd that a guy would do that with a good truck.....but we aren't complaining!
Best thing I ever found in the woods was a 7 point buck. |

Re: Ya never know what you'll find out in the woods!
I find morels.
I do believe it's a simple matter of putting the parking pawl parts in. I put a line-lock in mine. that was before I learned they aren't meant for parking brakes. I'm glad I never had it leak dwn on me!
