hey v8 350 owners..... easy quick Q....

i have a 350 v8 chevy engine.....

any idea what oil filter goes on it?

i'm questioning the results of the parts store.... cause the filter i took off doesnt match the one they gave me.....

Phram PH5??? is what they gave me....

do you think the last place that changed my oil screwed it up and put on the wrong filter?

thanks for the quick response!

ciao!

First off, I am sure you have heard it before, but don't put a Fram oil filter on it, go with a delco or napa at the least.

ok, i think i got ahold of another board member which told me the same thing....

this is what gscotti had to say.....

he said dont buy a phram, because they ten to let more particles through than most....

he also said that there are two filter sizes for a chevy v8 350 engine....

the first is the PH5 Phram size (or longer size)..... and the second is the PH30 or the shorter size..... but both will work....

it looks like the oil change place put on the shorter filter the last time i had it changed this winter.....

i am makin a trip back to the parts store to dump off the oil, so i might just change out the phram for another brand while i'm there....

thanks krue!

I have two sets of filter in the garage, one is a GM-PF35 and a Napa which equtes to a PH25, the difference is the 25 is shorter hold a 1/2 QT and the 35 holds a QT. In the late model GM trucks they used a GM-PH51 very thin but longer than the 25 series held 1/2 QT oil.

The correct A/C number is PF-35 (longer, therefore more capacity)--as Martha USED to say "It's a good thing". I would use the A/C or Wix--JMO. I don't know if all the denigration of Fram is true or not, but I have always used A/C or Wix.

...i always went rule of thumb..ac delco 35 without headers...25 with headers...the shorter 25 is easeir to get on and off with headers

A mechanic friend who built an engine for me a long time ago showed me the only difference in the filter lengths was open air space. Not a bigger filter. He cut one of each open and showed me this. He said the longer filter was intended for truck motors so people would pay a few extra pennies for it thinking they had to. But the shorter more common filter for Chevy engines would be fine and would make no difference. Just a preference thing really. I have always used the more common shorter filter on my trucks as I have with the camaro when I had it. I never heard about the "problem" with Phram /Fram filters. I'm not doubting or disbuting that. As far as the length of the filter I don't believe it matters. It hasn't mattered with my vehicles.
As far as changing the filter when you go back to the parts store, personally I wouldn't bother. But the next time you change your oil I would just put on the one you prefer.
Just my opinion here.

71longbed---PF 1218 is a later # than they used on our old trucks--It's on my '96 5.7L I think Jewels is a '68.

You might want to check out this study/test on oil filters.
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html
By the way NAPA oil filters are made by Wix. Another good filter is any of the ones made by Champion Labs ( K&N, Mobil 1). Better to run toilet paper than Fram, which by the way there used to be an aftermarket filter that used toilet paper

The toilet paper filters were better than any filter on the market today. Bummer you can't still get the kit. Kinda messy though.
The NAPA filter number (made by WIX as stated) is 1060 I think.
The Fram is an over advertised POS. Our oil lab has proven this to me by pulling out the cut open filters that they have put away. The best for the dollar is WIX/Napa.
Jewel's truck IS a 68, but her engine is a 76 if memory serves...the 350 shoulda givin it away since 307 and 327 were the only small blocks in 68.

Neonlarry--thanks for the link to the study! Good stuff!
I wonder if somone has done a similar study on air filters--I have STRONG reservations about K & N filtering capability!

Hey Andy, I know where you can get a kit to use the TP filter, Edb has one on his truck. It's a bypass filter set up. I plan on getting one for my truck when I put a new engine in it.

Yeah, to go along with the Fram info a buddy of mine is a diesel mechanic for Case Equip. and he has seen several Frams inner filter material break loose and get sucked into the engines causing a rebuild!!

The 1218 has a anti-drainback valve. This is an excellant upgrade for any vehicle.

PF25 has been replaced by a PF454
AC also makes a 2qt spin on filter, but I can't remember the number.

Cut open that fram that you get, and go get a NAPA one, or a WIX...you'll never run a Fram again.

passthebuck... you read my mind exactly. I only use Wix oil filters! And you are correct about the anti-drainback valve.
