Sorry... just a little humor... at least I laughed. Out loud... in front of people...

I've been with GM truck for 38 years in product design/development and vehicle assembly. I've worked in about a dozen GM assembly plants; My first (real) job was as a supervisor on the assembly line in Flint.

No sarcasm here. I can probably sincerely answer any question you can think of.

Mistakes happen. Sometimes there just is no opportunity to error proof - or it's not worth the effort.

They don't add value in our world - if anything they detract. I've got a friend with an original, unrestored '65 GTO (4280 original miles) that was built with the wrong gage cluster bezel and the wrong tail lamp bezel. It has been a source of endless grief for him.

Re: 1972 Chevy Cheyenne longbed L upside down

One other thought (relative to letters) -

I have a friend that used to work in a Ford assembly plant.

He installed the "R" and the "D" on the decklid; somebody else installed the "F" and the "O".

I told him "...it's a good thing you didn't work for Studebaker. You'd be wore out at the end of the day..."

That reminds me...In 1975 I bought a new Ford F-100. The hood had "F O R D" in 1 inch block letters across the front. This was about the time that the Carol Burnett show was in full swing. I switched the F and D in honor of Tim Conway's Dorf character.

Re: 1972 Chevy Cheyenne longbed L upside down

The "O" was upside down on my Blazer tailgate band....I noticed it once when the light was just right...... it reflected different than the other letters...and yes an "O" is an "O"........ even upside down........but.......the letters are tapered.
So I proceeded to remove it and turn it "right side up"....

I just ordered that on Amazon after reading your post. The reviews people have written on it are great. Should be four bucks well spent.

Re: 1972 Chevy Cheyenne longbed L upside down

I knew an old guy that was a welder in Detroit on a car frame assembly line many years ago....he talked about the welds he had to make as it moved down the line.

He had only so long to make the welds as he followed it along....someone else was across from him welding the other side....the line did not stop....if a weld was missed, the frame went right on down the line.
Like most people, he said that if it was Friday or Monday.....good luck getting a good welded frame....

He was a riveter on the GM truck and bus line in Flint. It's a story of substance abuse with all the attendant humor and sadness. After reading it, you'll be more amazed that anything came off the line made right rather than finding a few things that came out wrong.

I still laugh when I think about the story he tells about management trying to improve morale by having someone in a mascot-type suit come into the factory to promote safety. One of the line guys got into a fist fight with the mascot...

Thanks Keith - great thread and I appreciate you spending time here. I worked in a helicopter factory for over a decade. There's similar stories to tell…

That '65 GTO made me nostalgic for my '65 Le Mans. Great car.

Re: 1972 Chevy Cheyenne longbed L upside down

My dad sometimes bought as many as three trucks a year. He had a [don't remember the right color names] pink and white 72 short grande. It turns out now that it would be really rare from what I've read but he hated it and couldn't wait to trade it off. Too many fancy things on it. He used to try to get a truck as close to tobacco juice brown so when he spit down the side it wouldn't show.
Anyway he bought a truck once that had a GMC grill Chevy tailgate and two GMC wheel covers and two Chevy. The fender emblems matched the hubcaps and it had a GMC steering wheel center.[it matched the grill] Lots of guys gave him grief about it he could care less. It didn't add any value except it is still being thought of this many years later.
