Powder coating - any "standard" colors? Can I topcoat powdercoat?

So a week after dropping my wheels off at Les Scwab along with the GM, Ditzler, and PPG color codes, I get a voicemail saying I have to pick a color because paint colors "don't mean anything to them".

I guess most trailers just have white wheels.

But I'm not very experienced with powder coating. Can they mix and match colors? I can tell them to match what's on the wheels now, but that's pointless if they're only choice is "bright white" on a color card.

Not quite sure what to do. My suspicion is that I should have them do them in something I can paint (like a primer power if there is such a thing) and then shoot the right single-stage color overtop of them myself.

Or if all powdercoating can be topcoated, I could have them do them in their white and then paint the right white on the faces.

Powder cannot be mixed like paint. The color is what it is.

You can topcoat powder no problem. Just sand to give it the proper tooth for your paint.

Mine is "bright white" which is way brighter (duh) than factory. If I were to do it over again, I would do argent which was the correct color for most 69's.

they can make most any color in powder but minimum quantities (sometimes 500 lbs powder!) make it unreasonable for folks. Usually PC companies will have preferred brands like Cardinal, you can pick one of their standards and save cost and time.
Also, when they mix custom colors the gloss and texture rarely end up such that you have a side by side match with the intended paint chip.

At the risk of starting a debate...

I have read all the threads that you probably did saying that the wheels should be a Ditzler or PPG off white. While this may be the case with the 1/2 ton 5 or 6 lug trucks, I have yet to be convinced that it's also the case for the 8 lug wheels. I replaced my factory rear wheels in 1970 with wide aftermarket black wheels. I painted them with good old Rustoleum gloss white. I never could see any color difference between the front and rear wheels. Here are 2 pictures taken in 2010 and 2013. The fronts had never been painted, and the rears are my 1970 paint job.

I don't recall ever seeing any argent silver 8 lug wheels on a 69 either.

I always powder coated them white and it looks fantastic. I never heard anyone say it didn't look right. I never thought it didn't look right. Why not just sand blast and paint? Paint will grab onto that surface better than to scuffed up powder coat. No problem Paint powder coat, though. Just seems redundant if you want a specific shade of paint anyway.

I did the Rallye wheels on my '90 Blazer gloss black powder coat. A couple years later I got Hurricanes and removed them. I scuffed them up and painted them back to stock color to use on a Medium Olive Poly '70 Custom SWB and it held up 100%.

FYI... Here's a picture of the worst of the 5 originals that I sandblasted and painted with the latest and toughest version of Rustoleum's gloss white. I figured if those I painted in 1970 did as well as they did for 45 years and 101,000 miles I'd do it again.

Re: Powder coating - any "standard" colors? Can I topcoat powdercoat?

I told them to just ago ahead and use the closest white they had to the original wheels. My only real concern is that my truck is two-tone so I have white body panels right near the white wheels, so any contrast would be more obvious.

Then again when I look at the original owner photos of this truck, which I'm fortunate to have, it looks like the wheels are a brighter white. Hard to really conclude much though.

Sound like I'm too late, but you can check out a website called Prismatic powders. They have hundreds of whites. You can get free samples sent out to you and match your color. Plus, they sell it in quantities of 1# and up.

Re: Powder coating - any "standard" colors? Can I topcoat powdercoat?

Powder coat is great but after time the white powder coating on my wheels started to crack and split where the lug nuts are torqued. I don't expect them to look good for much longer and already trying to decide which hubcaps to run.
