How wide are my rims?
Is there a way to tell how wide the original steel rims on my '70 are? I'd like to put wider tires on, but don't know how wide these rims are.
Are they stamped somewhere on the outside? Thanks!

Re: How wide are my rims?
It sounds complicated, but its not hard. Take some 1x2 or whatever and strap or tape horizontally at the center line of the tire on both sides inside and out.
Measure the distance between. Next measure from the 1st parallel flat surface to the board on both sides. Add those. Subtract that number from the earlier one and round to the nearest inch. My guess is 6" |

Looks like 6" from here.

Re: How wide are my rims?
Should be stamped on the inboard section of the rim. Not inside the tire though, the tire stays mounted. Remove the lug nuts, flop the wheel over, you should see it. Sometimes I am horrible at trying to get my point across....

Re: How wide are my rims?
My truck lists the rim size on the SPID, but that may be only in the case of an optional rim size.

Anyway, I'm thinking of going to 265's or 275's. Who sells 15" 6-bolt steel rim (7-inch?) that will fit a tire this wide? Thanks!

Re: How wide are my rims?
You might think about any 73-87 4x4 Blazer or half ton truck 4x4 rally style wheels. I think all were 8".
You can run w/ or w/ trim rings and caps as preferred. |

Re: How wide are my rims?
Thanks Franken. I forgot to mention, I'd like to keep the stock hubcaps, so I'm looking for a non-rally rim with the hubcap "nibs".

Re: How wide are my rims?
Not sure about which rims to buy. But for a 265 series tire I recommend 8". Its perfect - I'm running that out back right now. A 7" rim makes a 265 balloon out in my opinion.
Beautiful truck

Re: How wide are my rims?
Most all 67-70 6 lug wheels I've seen are 5-1/2 inches...

Re: How wide are my rims?
FWIW, our Tacoma came with 265/70s on 16x7" wheels and it seems like a good fit. Lots of folks upgrade to 265/75, same width but an inch taller. However many 265/75 are LR-E only which is fine for a heavier truck, but overkill for a typical mid-size. At any rate an 8" wheel should also work well for a 265-series tire.

Re: How wide are my rims?
Thanks for all of the thoughts!
So, if I'm looking for an 8" wide 6-lug steel rim that will hold a factory hubcap, does anybody make those? The closest I'm seeing online is the Vintique "Smoothies" on Summit. (I don't think those will hold a hubcap though) No offense, but I'm not a fan of the Rally rims. Just looking for an 8" steel rim that will hold a hubcap.

Re: How wide are my rims?
These are what you want. Check the parts board, there are usually some for sale.

Re: How wide are my rims?
If you have your SPID on the glovebox door it's a cinch on something original. Go to the GM Heritage Center online. You can download the 1970 salesman's Truck Fact Book which is chock full of all sorts of technical and option info. Just match the option code on the SPID to the wheel/tire chart in the book and you'll see the rim width listed as part of the data.
Voila! Here's the link: https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...olet-Truck.pdf
