68 327 new starter question!
Ok I have done some reading and searching on the forum and I would like to replace my starter on my 68 327 3 speed. It starts cold but not warm.
I have read on the high torque corvette starter and the gear reduction torque starter but my question is with my original motor and tranny set up the starter is a front mount and not a top/bottom bolt. Is there a starter I can buy to give me more torque? Or is my block drilled out for the torque/top mount starter vs the front flange style? I would love to pick it up on the way home. Thanks Chad |

The PMGR starters are great. Sounds like a trip under your truck is in order.

Re: 68 327 new starter question!
i could be wrong but I believe the 3 speed trans starters bolt to bell housing and are 168 tooth starters I am unsure about 327 but it should be drilled for a starter but I don't know witch one if its a strait bolt pattern its a 153 tooth starter pattern if its stagerd bolt pattern it should be 168 but I'm unsure if the nose will fit the trans because of the factory being bolted there . but its possible you could get one of the corvette starters and change the nosecone

I'd also take a look at your solenoid. I am guessing that is probably your problem.

X2... Contacts under the plastic cap on the back of the solenoid wear, they are made of brass. Some times you can remove the cap and flip the brass bolt 180 degrees and its fixed.

Re: 68 327 new starter question!
here is another issue The starter that is in it is out of a straight 6 and not the original 327! although they look the same are they? Maybe this is my problem altogether? When I started working on the truck 2 years ago and picked up where my dad left off I thought the engine was seized up but it was the starter. I swapped out the one from the parts truck which happens to be a straight 6. I never thought anything about it until We started to drive the truck on small drives and couldn't restart it warm.
set the dist. to where it runs and sounds good but if you shut it off you have to turn it clockwise to get it to start but then it doesn't run good but starts like a champ. Am I chasing a timing issue or starter issue or both? oh and it is a rebuilt engine that basically sat since 1990 getting started occasionally and rolled over every so often over that time. |

Re: 68 327 new starter question!
headers can heat up a starter and hard to start. Ive had these problems over the years. bad ground oil and grease mucking up starter loose or missing bolts weak battery bad solenoid loose wires and worn out starter. if you have headers buy a heat shield

Re: 68 327 new starter question!
When you say "It starts cold but not warm." do you mean it's slow when hot or does NOTHING? If it does NOTHING that's solenoid (and more accurately, the wire feeding is usually). Don't replace the starter for that, won't help.
If it's slow, that's different.

Re: 68 327 new starter question!
use a timing light it really is worth the investment. I put hole in a piston once ouch still bugs me cause that engine was great
