Rear license plate bracket: how does this mount??

I just picked up a NOS rear license plate mounting bracket (three of them, actually--friend gave 'em to me).
I can't figure out how or where this mounts.
It's got a 1963 date code stamped in it, and I've seen them on ebay listing them for trucks.
Any idea?

They mount on the rear cross sill.

Most I have seen are for step bumpers, and mount next to the plate like in the photo below. Obviously, there must be a shorter version or the arms are trimmed off at the dealer.

I don't have a pic, but when I took my step bumper off, this bracket had been bent out of the way, it was on the left side , and screwed into the rear bed sill .

I had asked on the forum, and someone posted in that it was the factory LP bracket that came on the trucks that did not have a bumper.

Re: Rear license plate bracket: how does this mount??

That makes sense. I don't know about our trucks, but I do remember in the '80s that rear bumpers on pick-up trucks were often an extra-cost option or dealer-installed. I remember asking someone at the time why all the new trucks at the dealership didn't have rear bumpers.

Re: Rear license plate bracket: how does this mount??

Brad,

IF you are using a rear bumper, technically you should have a bracket like the one in the picture attached.

IF you are not using a bumper, then the one in your picture can be used. When I first got my truck, I had a bracket like yours, mounted to the rear more bed cross frame.

Re: Rear license plate bracket: how does this mount??

My truck is a long-bed step-side, but I'm going to get a wrap-around diamond plate dealer-installed rear bumper. Not sure what I'll do at that point for a tag light or even the mounting location.

Thanks for the info, guys!
