Re: My big orange big block
As I have had to post a bunch lately.. please leave the moderating to the staff. If you see something you think is miss posted or needs attention use the report a post feature. An actual staff member will read it and take care of the issue.
Truth be, it is a post about a motor, so it "should" be in the engine and drivetrain area. Since we are chit chatting about it possibly going into the truck, well it would be an engine and drivetrain discussion still.. However, I am leaving it here until later.. why? Because I want to |

And after all, they feature "Truck Flow 340cc rect port heads" but no one noticed :-)

You rang?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOwfLbjDRj0 You know, sometimes, one just has to have a little fun. The world seems to be lacking that sometimes here in 2016.

Re: My big orange big block
The turbos arrived today (no manifolds yet though). Here's a picture of one next to the big block starter for reference.
Looks like the wastegates and adapters will cost as much as the turbos did... I'm not sure yet how I plan to mount and connect wastegates, will know more when I receive the manifolds.

Did you mention what psi you plan to run? Didn't see it.

Re: My big orange big block
I'm hoping 14 or so. I think the GT45s will do that, and I have good heads, studs, cometic MLS gaskets, and dropped the compression to 8:1. I also hope to have a good cold air-water intercooler.
So I don't really know what I can get away with. Secretly I'm shooting for 1000hp. I figure that will take 14-16psi if the motor makes 502 NA. If it doesn't, I hope to hit 1000 ft/lbs, which should only take about 12psi.

Sounds awesome.
If you need something to put it in after you're done playing I'll volunteer my truck to the cause

Re: My big orange big block
Just a bit of an update - got the motor and EFI wired, plugs and wires in, some of the intake piping, and the intercooler.
Going to be tough routing the exhaust from that inward-facing turbo, not sure how that's going to work yet!

Looks sweet! Can't wait to see the numbers and a dyno video of course.

Re: My big orange big block
Not too much visually different, I have the ECU wired up, the ignition, all of that. Did the cold side air intake (except for the Y, which is beyond my welding and I'll farm out).
Currently working on the oil feed and drainbacks.

Re: My big orange big block
How in the world do you fit that in a vehicle if that's what you wanted to do? Isn't the radiator and fans in the way?
Thanks for the update Dave this is really interesting to me. Id love to do a turbo small block when I have the skills down |

I was kind of thinking early Monte Carlo... they have an enormous engine bay and lots of room in front of the engine.

Re: My big orange big block
No, about 3 weeks ago my mother in law died unexpectedly while visiting and then literally on the day of her funeral, the father in law found out he has weeks to live from previously undiagnosed pancreatic cancer. It's been a real gong show of life around here for the last several weeks... especially for my wife! Oh, and my bathroom plumbing exploded and did $50K damage to my house... you know it's a crappy month when that's a minor aside.
I did stop by the shop where I'm going to have it finished (some of the aluminum welding is above my pay grade) and dyno'd, it can go in fairly shortly. I also have to decide whether to keep the BigStuff3 computer I already have or buy a Holley HP controller. My BS3 does almost everything I need, but it doesn't have any learning or anything...

...and her father just passed away the day after I wrote that! I think that's all the shoes dropped though, hopefully.

Re: My big orange big block
Sorry to hear about your losses Dave, life can be a real B. Sometimes. Im Looking forward to seeing this monster run! I would think 1000 hp is should come relatively easy with this setup.
