327 Harmonic balancer

Rebuilding a 327 and noticed there is no bolt or threads in the crankshaft that holds the balancer in place. I check a 350 on an engine stand nearby and it has a 1 1/2 fine threaded bolt and a 1/4 inch washer on the crankshaft holding the balancer and pulleys in place. Is this supposed to be?

Re: 327 Harmonic balancer

Yes your 327 Harmonic balancer was pressed on, nothing unusual about it

Re: 327 Harmonic balancer

Thanks jrainman I have not worked on a 327 before and thought the missing bolt was odd. Very simple explanation.

Re: 327 Harmonic balancer

If I remember correctly, the high performance engines got the bolt.
In 67,I believe all small blocks got it.
My original 68,C-10 with 327 has the bolt in it.
Mike.

Re: 327 Harmonic balancer

Hmmm! The 327 engine I am working on is a 69 with a 68 date code. Then I check a 69 with a 307 and it has no bolt. All the 350 4 bolt blocks I checked have a bolt. Interesting.

Re: 327 Harmonic balancer

As I recall, most of the small journal motors had press on balancers. They usually had short water pumps too. I think 67-68 were the cross over years where you could get either style.
