1969 - 427
I have met a guy that wants to seel me a 427 that came out of a 1969 Impalla. The car was wrecked about 15 years ago and the engine is still in the Impalla.
What problems would I be walking into if I decided on the swap? How much HP and Torque would it have had stock? Will It bolt up to a 700R4? or will I have to stay with a TH350? All comments are appreciated.

well if it's been sittin in a wrecked car outside in canada chances are its all rusted up inside and needs a full rebuild, so the hp/torque would be dependant on how you build it the 700R4 would be ok with a performance rebuild up to 500hp i wouldn't try it with a stock one you'd be better with th400

...if it's an original passenger car 427 and you get it for a decent price you could resell it for a killing...most 427's i've seen are tall blocks or 454 blocks with a 396 crank..the original pass. car ones i have seen go for top dollar!!!!...so check the numbers and it will say pass. car on the block..if i remember correctly

If you want to swap it, you will need new frame mounts. I would go with the 72 type, they are more expensive, but are much better design. Then, you might need a new driveshaft since the new engine mount (might) move your engine forward or backward a little. Your 700 will be fine with a stock 427, but if you rebuild it, I would also rebuild the trans. Better safe than sorry. To rebuild a 700 to handle a mild big block, you are looking at a little cash, but it's worth it to have the O/D and a good 1st gear. I would get the engine if it's cheap, and rebuild it. after it's built, then start gathering the parts. I would love a BB, but they are way out of my price range right now.

The 69 Impala's had 3 basic 427 combinations...
The L72... 425HP.. the L36.. 290HP and the LS1.. 335HP.. Not sure about the torque specs.. If you clean off the grease on the passenger side of the block just below the head and peek at the last two digits.. It will tell you what version it is... The engine codes for the are: LS1's...MA,LY,LK,LJ,LE,LB......L36's...MC,MB,LZ,LI,LH,LG,LF,LC,LA.... L72's...LS,MD,LD... Most of the Impalas had the LS1... but ya just never know If you can buy it right dont hesitate... Even as a "core motor" the LS1 is worth $750-$1000.. the L36.. about $1000-$1500 and if its a L72.. about.. $2500 or more.. Even the whole Impala has potental to be worth alot to the right person.. I agree with jmanz69's.. opinion on the 72 style mounts and his ideas on the trans.. Or get the T400 from the Impala... or it is possible to stay with the T350... It has a lower 1st gear than the T400 and uses less horspower to run.. I have run many a T350's behind healthy BB's .. if they are built right you will be amazed.. Good luck on your venture.. Keep us posted... |

I will get him to get me pics of the numbers. Thanks for the info. If it happens to be a "TRUCK" motor, do you think the swap would be worth it?

Very unlikely it will be a truck engine in an impala. Just want to find out which 427 horsepower rating it is. I think even if it was a truck engine, it would be worth it. You can build those truck engines into huge strokers. You will be very happy with a 427 car engine, they kick butt.

I second that, if its in halfway decent shape a 427 passenger car motor is worth acquiring even if has to sit around til you decide what you gonna do with it.Classic Big Blocks Rule
