64 gmc steering column issues
I have some serious flop in my steering wheel. needs lower bearing I'm guessing. horn does not work nor do the turn signals. I read somewhere that the 64 gmc uses 62 or 63 chevy column parts. is that correct? what parts do I need to order and where should I get them from to fix these issues? thanks

Re: 64 gmc steering column issues
I have a 64 GMC also and yes the steering column parts are the same as a 63 Chevy. Seems they stayed with the older part one more year the Chevy did.

Re: 64 gmc steering column issues
GMC turn signal is different then a chevy turn signal so you have to be careful when ordering parts.

Re: 64 gmc steering column issues
Classic Industry... I had the turn signal switch in hand and returned is as I ended up getting an Ididit column to go with my No Limit power rack .
Comparing it to the old one, it was correct. Part numbers are in the picture below. The wire location and the screw location near the turn signal are the major difference. The lower bearing is available. The upper bearing, with the horn contact are back ordered everywhere you may find them online, Impala parts places, truck places, etc. That lower bearing seems to be a bear to remove as you will need to take the column out, and pull the inner steering shaft down from the bottom and knock the bearing all the way to the top because of the rag joint flange, and then bang it all the way back down....etc. Just an FYI. Fitment on the switch is as follows, MP8685 - 1963-66 Without Tilt Wheel Plastic Turn Sign Switch Complete replacement self-canceling turn signal switch with correct connector and wiring colors to match up with your original. Applications: 1963 Chevrolet pickup 1963-66 GMC pickup 1963 Panel or Suburban Adam |

Re: 64 gmc steering column issues
If you happen to just need the canceler....Classic site as well
1963 Full Size Chevrolet , 63 Truck Turn Signal Lever Cam Without Tilt Wheel CX1178 - 1963 Full Size Chevrolet , 63 Truck Turn Signal Lever Cam Without Tilt Wheel Cancelling cams are mounted below the cap but usually on top of the turn signal switch. When placed in its correct position, the cam will shut the turn signal off when the steering wheel is returned to the centered position. If your turn signals turn off prematurely or not at all then you'll probably want to replace the cam. Adam |
