6000/12000/24000 miles service

Hi guys,

Do you stick to Chevy service manual regarding interval services, or do you add/remove points ta have a smooth and long life runnin engine ?

To be honest, I change the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles and do other services as needed. I check the brake linings twice a year and lights and fluids regularly. I built my truck and I drive my truck, so I feel like I know when it needs some particular attention. I think the biggest thing is that I don't let things go until they become bigger problems.

Oh, and around here it's really important to wash the road salt off as soon as you can.

By the way, is that Paris, Texas or Paris, France? I know some of our board members are in England, but I'm not aware of any in France.

Yep Paris from France, as soon as my next garage will be built, I'll put the truck on the west (French) coast in my second house.

Because many of us own these trucks as collectibles, they get driven differently and a lot less than they would have been when they were sold new. Also, today's engine oils, particularly the full synthetics, are much better than the old ML MM MS oils that were on the market in the late 60s. Therefore, the service routines, at least for some of us, can be quite different than the ones in the owners manual or warranty booklet.

I change oil twice a year, even though I probably drive less than 2500 miles in a year. I always make sure that when I drive the beast, I get it fully warm before putting it away. I use 5W-30 synthetic, and lube the chassis each time I change oil and filter (Napa Gold).

Checking the brakes? Once every blue moon, just to make sure there are not leaks of fluid or axle oil into the drums.

I do flush the brake system every couple of years, and change the coolant every two years. Trans oil gets the sniff test every once in a while, and I plan to change the rear gear oil to 75W-90 synthetic, as soon as it warms up around here, just because I don't know what's in the axle now.

Ignition points, rotor, cap, and plugs were just done, and I can't see any reason to do them for a heckuva long time the way this truck gets used.

I's a hobby vehicle, at least for me, and I enjoy taking a day now and then to get out and get some dirt under my nails.
