1967 - 1969 4X4 V6 Crossmember

I recently picked up a couple of 478 V6 GMC engines. One of them is likely going into my old F20 Farmall tractor that I just picked up with a bad engine. The other will hopefully find it's way into my '72 K20.

My question for you folks is this. On the 4X4's, is the entire V6 crossmember different from the V8 crossmember or is it just the perches? Does anyone happen to have pictures? Know where to get one?

Subd! don't have an answer for you but I'd like to see this come together. It should be pretty cool.

Re: 1967 - 1969 4X4 V6 Crossmember

The 477.7-cubic-inch (7,828 cc) 478 was one of the largest V6 engines ever built. Gross output was 254 hp (189 kW) at 3700 rpm and 442 lb·ft (599 N·m) at 1400 rpm. Bore was 5.125 in (130.2 mm) and stroke was 3.86 in (98 mm). It was introduced in 1962 as a Magnum engine in the 6500 series trucks.

I'm thinking the frame in these 6500 series is much different than a c-10/20

Here is a pic of the V6 crossmember and perches.
V8 crossmembers and perches are different.

That's out of a 4X4? It definitely is way different from a V8. I suppose the one you have pictured isn't for sale?

Do you know if the transmission was mounted in the same location behind a V6 as a V8 or was it all slid forward?

Sure is. But 305's and 351's were available in GMC pickups up to '69. A 478 should bolt in place of a 305/351.

Maybe, but I'm thinking taller deck might be an issue.. and the 478 oil pan might not have the profile to clear the crossmember,
that's a lot of cubes in a 60* 6 hole .
bet a tall deck bbc is shorter.

Yes it was out of a 4x4. I actually sold this one to a board member about a month ago.

All the transmissions were mounted in the same location to my knowledge.

This is for a 4x4 but for a 292 inline six, very very very hard to find...I searched for over a yr for the passenger side perch, never did find one...

The crossmember is the same for 292 and V6. The perches are v6 only.

Re: 1967 - 1969 4X4 V6 Crossmember

Here is a link to a Board members album; I think he goes by ERL. His truck is Majestic! He may have some answers or specifics as well.

Here are some photos I saved from an old EBay listing of a 1969 V6 4WD.

*on a side note, the engine mount on the driver-side, does not appear to be the block style I have normally seen for these engines.

305 and 478 have the same deck height. 305 pickup oil pan will fit on a 478.

Good to know. Did you sell the cross member and perches or just the cross member?
