power steering gear box rebuild
Hi All,
Have any of you rebuilt a power steering gearbox? Mine leaks out the input shaft. I'm wondering how difficult it is, and whether or not special tools are required. I'm considering the rebuild vs. replace option because the rebuild kit is about $140 cheaper and it's more readily available. '71 K20 Thanks in advance for any advice. Ben |

Check out RockAuto.com - They might be under $100 for a rebuilt.

The core charge is $70+. Rock auto is out of stock of the brand i'm familiar with, and about $170 anyhow (plus core or send it in). They offer a rebuild service which seems to be the cheapest route, but again, shipping and price probably add up to about the above.

If you're referring to where the pitman arm attaches, your local auto parts will have the rebuild kit. Check out youtube...I repaired mine this summer, no runs no drips all is dry...Ed

Re: power steering gear box rebuild
If your referring to the steering column input...very easy to just change that seal, you need a pin type adjustable spanner wrench. That piece comes out without upsetting anything else, before you remove it after you remove the lock nut determine how far it screws in approximately finger tight then replicate that figure when re-assembling and you will be close enough as far as pre-load.

Re: power steering gear box rebuild
If you do choose to try it for yourself, there's a good reference guide with pictures -- google "pirate4x4" and "saginaw box rebuild", you should find the article I used. I do recommend getting the spanner wrench. You can get by without it, but it does make the job a little easier where it's needed, and they aren't expensive. The whole rebuild kit costs around $25

Re: power steering gear box rebuild
Tx firefighter did a real good 'how to' on replacing the two seals on the power steering box. I tried to cut and paste it the URL but could not get this crazy phone to do it for me. I found it on a quick search Using the search function and the Post's title is ,back to basics', Lots of pictures and it was very helpful to me when I changed the seals on my power steering box. His post did not get into changing out the gears or the bearings. It sounds like that was much more involved than changing out the seals.
