Swapping heater core with evaporator
Hi all,
I am wondering if it is possible to swap the heater core out and install a AC evaporator. I don't plan on needing a heater but want AC and am looking to find out the easiest way to add ac with out spending an arm and leg. I was looking at grabbing all the AC parts off a newer chevy truck and retrofitting them into my truck. Please let me know if I am on the track or missing the whole idea. |

Central MN and no heater? anyways the hole for the heater core is way too small for the evap core. Look into an aftermarket AC unit

Re: Swapping heater core with evaporator
I have done the swap with stock components and it wasn't that hard.
I am also tinkering with the Idea of installing an evaporator into the heater core opening as I think you are trying to do. I just haven't come up with a good idea for the vents. My 2000 Toyota Echo evaporator is almost the right size but a few inches too deep. Also not sure how to mount it in the box yet. Kind of a hair brain scheme as I was just standing there wondering if I should just get rid of all this junk. I already have all this stuff left over from replacing everything in my wife's beater. Her compressor gave up due to a impeller breaking. So I thought Hey why not stick it all in my Cheap build Blazer "No Daggum Money" build and boom Ice Cold air for almost nothing.

Re: Swapping heater core with evaporator
Thanks guys for the replies. I was just thinking is all I need is a way to get cold air moving in the truck and swapping out the heater core for an evaporator looks to be the easiest way. I thought about running the ac pump on a thermal switch and use the standard heater controls for the fan. The other idea that I have been thinking about is using a self contained under dash unit out of a mustang or focus. Any thoughts?

I think an underdash unit is the easiest way to go. You can get the unit itself new fr around $100 on ebay.
