Power Steering with LONG water pump?
Quick question for those in the know...
My 1970 C-10 has a 350 SBC with what I just learned is the LONG water pump. (PO swapped in an engine from a 1974 GM passenger car many years ago) I'm looking to add power-steering to this truck, so I as I understand it, the standard power steering brackets from most of our trucks won't work on this truck. Where should I source a pump and brackets that will fit this truck? I do plan on replacing the water pump, so should I just swap it to a short pump? (I'm assuming you can't just swap in the short pump as the pulleys won't line up, correct?) If it helps to answer the questions above, this truck as a two groove pulley on the crank, and the 3-wire alternator is mounted on a long bracket on the driver's side. Thanks much!

Re: Power Steering with LONG water pump?
Power steering brackets and pulleys dont effect the water pump usually , sometimes the balencer pulley for the steering is a single , I have seen some balencers with the pulley built in [grooved ballencer ] , and some 3 groove balencer pulleys , many variables , tons of mix and match with these motors

Re: Power Steering with LONG water pump?
Any '73-'85 setup should work from a truck.
But I would try and piece together a complete short water pump setup to put all the accessories where they should be originally.

Quote:
1) Short Water-pump (obviously) 2) New Alternator bracket? (mine is the long flat one that arches over to the Driver's side) (or maybe a different alternator pulley?) 3) Different Crank Pulley?

Re: Power Steering with LONG water pump?
Short water pump pieces are a lot harder to find. Other than trucks and Corvettes everything GM was long water pump from 1970 and newer. Trucks went long water pump in '73

Re: Power Steering with LONG water pump?
I just put a v8 in my 67. It has the long water pump and p/s. I was able to use the original alternator and pulley. As I recall, the p/s mounts to the motor mount and exhaust manifold. My crank has 3 pulleys.
If you search my name, there are threads with some good pics. If you want more, pm me. I'm pretty sure I have at least a p/s cradle mount that was left over that I could send you if you can't find one. Last edited by dave`12; 01-22-2017 at 02:34 PM. |

Re: Power Steering with LONG water pump?
I just added power steering and power brakes to my first truck build a 70 C10 ( I have done a few cars). I used the Brothers kit added two groove pulleys on the long water pump and crankshaft left the alternator on the drivers side so I wouldn't have to lengthen the wire. I had to use 1/2 spacers on the water pump and crankshaft pulleys to line everything up but it seems to work fine. I am looking forward to spring here in Columbus Ohio so I can put some miles on it
Good Luck! |
