1965 C-10 disc brake conversion - need advice on systems

Hello:

Just wrapping up my 1965 C-10 rolling chassis and I have been mulling the idea of converting the front drum brakes to disc brakes (including two part master cylinder) for quite some time now. I am keeping stock height (no drop) and want to find a kit that is pretty much all inclusive and that contains everything for a complete conversion (except brake lines as I will have to fab them).

So far, I have looked into two systems:

LMC truck - offers spindles, disc conversion and master cylinder/prop valve kits - buying all 3 kits appears to convert the front to power disc brakes - just need to add lines.

Summit Racing - offers a kit from SSBC (A-126-8) that has a complete kit, including master cylinder and prop valve, but you have to press off the drums and use your original hub. I like this one as I don't have to disassemble the spindle from the completed chassis. This will result in a manual disc brake (no power booster), but that is fine with me.

Are there any other systems out there that are pretty much complete that I should be looking at? Any comments (pro or con) on the two listed above? Between the LMC and Summit solutions, Summit is about $300.00 cheaper.

You can do this using stock factory parts. You can order them from www.rockauto.com or even go to your local parts store. What I like about this is parts availability for later down the road. I was aware from LMC that you can use 71-72 spindles, but I didn't now rockauto.com sold spindels. The rotors and calipers are easily available. I will check on this. There are no geometry issues with 71-72 spindles?

You can always piece it together. I used:

CPP Spindles
Wilwood D52 Calipers
Oriley Auto Parts Disc & National Bearings

That is, if you are doing a 5 lug conversion, don't know if you can get a 6 lug disc?

my spindles are from a 75

Yes they do make a 6 lug disc. Don't know what they came off of but I ordered a set for my truck from Bill's Truck Shop up here in Ontario.

The correct 6 lug rotors are not from any OEM application. The aftermarket buys blank rotors for the 5 lug application and drills them for the 6 x 5.5 bolt pattern. The '88-'98 light duty C2500 6 lug rotors will not work correctly.

man I've been thinking about this for years and just haven't pulled the trigger. maybe it's time.
I think Pro Performance has a decent kit with upgrade options too.

So I can buy spindles from CPP, then get everything else over the counter at a parts house, from a mid-70's truck? And the CPP spindles will work with my 64-66 ball joints and tie rod ends?

But the Summit 6-lug rotors and mid-70's calipers still don't clear the stock, original 6-lug 64-66 wheels, right?

Probably not. You can use mid 70's 4x4 wheels though

Disc breaks will not work with stock steel wheels.

I am just waiting for my supplier's new kit to come out for the 60-66 's in both fronts or the 4 wheel to come out in a couple of weeks.....but i do tons of the booster/master/proportion I will be a vendor here in a couple of days . But do your self a favor and make sure you at least go to a dual master for sure . Those singles are bad voo doo especially the newer ones . I won't even do a brake job in the shop on one of those ...I was young I had 2 bad experiences and i cringe every time i see one of those single masters lol. I just got these and dig them....

Solution:

First, thanks for the valuable information. In looking at many of the vendors and options, I have decided to select SSBS (Stainless Steel Brake Systems) solution.

1. I can retain my original spindles with this system.
2. I can utilize my 6 lug hubs by grinding off the 3 rivets and separating the drums from the hubs.
3. A call to SSBS about the brake proportional valve allowed me easy access to support staff at SSBS. They were knowledgeable and friendly.
4. I will order a spare set of pads to store away in case I need them in the near future.

I used Master Power Brakes complete kit. I think the part number was
6372SK(super kit). I went to a 5 lug setup so dent my axles to Moser Engineering and had them re drilled to the same lug pattern. Been 18 years now and holding up good
