What are the differences between Longhorn frame and C20 frame?

This is my first real post on the board. I just finished my introduction post.

Obviously the length is different, but is the Longhorn heavier duty or designed differently? I've been told the frames between C20 and C10 are the same, only the suspension changed between them. If I found a Longhorn frame, could it be shortened to a short box like the long box frame can? I seem to run into Longhorns quite often. I though they were a rare model, but they seem to be around in decent numbers. Thanks for your help.

Welcome. Pending better replies, here's a couple pages with frame info that might help.

I'll be surprised if some members don't ask you to please please do not cut up a longhorn frame!

Thanks Stocker. I wondered about that. I'd rather not cut up a valuable truck. 1st real post and I end up making a bunch of enemies.

Re: What are the differences between Longhorn frame and C20 frame?

My experience with the Longhorn frame is it is the same as the 4x4 frame. It has parallel rear rails and 40.5" spring centers like the 4x4 trucks. It also has 2 1/2" wide leaf springs like the 4x4 trucks. This on a '70 GMC 2500 Longhorn, 350, 4 speed that I took apart so my sample is pretty small.

Re: What are the differences between Longhorn frame and C20 frame?

So far as I'm aware the C20 Longhorn is actually the C30 133" frame (there is no 3/4T 133" frame) but with C2500 suspension pieces. Otherwise the C30 Longhorns would have a different frame, but I don't think they do.

All I know for sure is that after restoring a 1-ton frame the 1/2-tons sure look spindly! And they'd say mine is fat an heavy, I'm sure. But they're quite different.

I think that is right as well Dave. And I actually modified my post to take that out because I haven't actually owned a C30 in 67-72 to compare to.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I will take the Longhorn trucks off my search list.

Re: What are the differences between Longhorn frame and C20 frame?

I bought one to cut down and wound up doing a full frame off of a Longhorn, so be careful, they grow on you :-)
