Brake light in dash
I have a question about the brake light in the fuel level gauge. Mine comes on when I start the truck, but not when I apply my parking brake. Is this light supposed to come on when I apply the parking brake? Is there a switch attached to the parking brake pedal?
Thank you for any help! 1971 Chevy SWB Fleet. 250 w/ 3 OTT |

Re: Brake light in dash
It's working exactly as designed.
Actually it should come on if there's a pressure unbalance in the braking system, like from a loss of fluid. No parking brake switch.

Re: Brake light in dash
Stomp on your brake pedal REALLY hard, that will usually cure the problem.

Re: Brake light in dash
^^ That sometimes works if the light stays on, but he doesn't seem to have that problem. His light comes on momentarily when he starts the truck, which is normal. That's what I am assuming anyway.
OP, help clear this up please!

Re: Brake light in dash
Our trucks didn't come with a "Parking Brake Indicator" light, but Andy posted a thread on how to hook one up.
I have my set up ready to go in. |

Re: Brake light in dash
Yup, just comes on momentarily on start up. I thought it was also supposed to come on when the parking brake was applied. Thank you for clearing this up, I really appreciate the help!

Re: Brake light in dash
yes, that's normal. If it comes on after start, it indicates a pressure differential between front/rear brake systems and lets you know you're soon going to be stopping on only the fronts or only the rears once the leaky system leaks out - i.e. time for a checkup! Often an indicator of a leaking wheel cylinder.
