Exhuast header recommendations

Any guidelines or recommendations out there for installing headers on a '65 swb with a '79 c10 sbc 350? The truck is lowered with drop spindles and springs. Just not sure if any standard header for the 350 will fit without clearance issues or not.

There are several options. Which one works for you depends on just what you want or need. There are headers made specifically for the '63-'66 trucks. Those are Hedman # 69260. Then there are headers made specifically for the '67-'87 trucks ('91 for the Suburbans). There are 3 options for those. Hedman 69090 and 69092, and Hooker 2452. All of these are long tube headers. So depending on how low your truck is, they may or may not work for you. There are shorty and mid length headers that will work, but I don't keep track of those. Hopefully someone that knows about those will chime in.

Has anyone had a good experience with a stainless steel header? I'm driving a lowered SWB with a mid 70's 350, manual trans & push rod clutch linkage. I need to redo my entire exhaust system so I would prefer to go stainless & not ever have to touch it again. Preferably 409 or 304 SS. 316 stainless would be great if the price was lower.

I am running early camaro headers with sbc and bags but I'm auto trans floor shift so couldn't say about manual clearance.

I have Hookers on my '65 with column shift. Truck is not lowered yet though, shouldn't be an issue for me. Only dropping a couple inches when I do.

As mentioned earlier, some of the full length headers may not work with lowered trucks...it depends on how low. The shorty headers address some of these lowering issues, and also offers the option of routing the exhaust to the outside of the frame. I've used the shorty swept back headers from Hedman with good access to the collector.

I would be careful with stainless headers on a street driven application. The large numbers of heat cycles contributes to cracking, particularly where the primaries are welded to the flange. The lack if elasticity and subsequent cracking, can show up pretty quickly (check the Jeep forums about the Bank TorqueTubes and cracking). I would stick with a mild steel header and ceramic metallic coat it for corrosion resistance, then go with stainless for the rest of the exhaust.

I'm using Patriot Clippsters on my 63. It lays frame and we only had to pie cut the collecter adapters a little to get the exhaust to clear the ground. My truck has a SBC with a TH350 and a floor shifter.

Hooker makes a set of headers specifically for 64-66 with 283 V8 and 3-speed manual. I have them on my 64 C10 with 350 and manual 3-speed. They clear all clutch and shifter linkage just fine.

hedman 69640 actually jeep to chevy v8 conversion shorty headers but work perfectly with the cpp or pol tubular mounts or stock

I haven't used them myself, but I have seen pics of them installed, and they did work. I'll see if I can find that thread.

Would it be possible for you to take some photos from the side of the truck, and from the front of the truck, showing how low the collectors hang in relation to the frame and front crossmember?

Then maybe post up the P/N of those Hooker Headers and what motor and trans you are running?

I had a 66 GMC w/a 283/3 speed column shift w/full length Flowtech headers, fit fine after slightly tweaking the clutch arm. Got Hooker 2452s on two 64's w/column shift autos(one 700r4, one TH350), fit great, both trucks are lowered but not very much(no dragging for me, too old).

I have a 66 that was a 3 spd column (changed to auto, but still used the 3spd steering shaft/column)/ My tuck sat really low, so I was using some SuperComps


hard to see in the pic but they tuck really nicely.

Here are a couple pics of the Hooker 2452's installed in a '64 with a 350. This member has since sold the truck, and I haven't seen him around here for some time. He said that the clutch bell crank fit without issue. I believe he had to trim a little off of the front of rod that goes from the bellcrank arm back to the fork.

What Hooker Header part number is that?

I have a 66' wuth a 350 and a 3 in a Tree, 3 speed that may be in the way of headers...
