Re: Chevy re enters Class 6 Truck Market

Glad to see it, but it looks European to me.

No mention of a Manual Trans.

Pretty heavy Front Axle and a Light Rear in my opinion. Also strange that the Axles add up to 31,000, but the GVW is just 25,950, just under CDL.

I believe I see Air Brakes under it though.

Re: Chevy re enters Class 6 Truck Market

For decades, all of GMs LCF trucks have been rebadged Isuzus.

There has been talk for a few years about GM hooking up with Navistar and building their own medium duty trucks.

Re: Chevy re enters Class 6 Truck Market

Yes, there is a joint venture GM/Navistar medium conventional in the works, we should see it next year. Not too much is known about it other than it will use the 6.6L Duramax diesel. A large displacement gasoline V-8 is rumored. The truck will be assembled by Navistar in Springfield Ohio, but GM did a lot of the engineering on it.

8.1-8.8L variants of the final 8.1L "Vortec" motor. Being designed to run on alternate fuel sources at well. Versions being built with and without twin turbo's. GM "Technically" outsourced the motor engineering. They don't own the patents on the big block castings anymore, sold them off to another company and hires them back in for this use.

I was just thinking about the GM/Navistars the other day wondering what was up with them. I thought this thread might be about those

Re: Chevy re enters Class 6 Truck Market

This thread got me all excited, then I found out it's just the cab over trucks. A replacement for the C4500-C7500 sure would be nice. The 6.6 and the big inline Izuzu would do nice just as before. A new big block gasser would be cool too. They can forget the Cat motor, that 3126 they ran for a while was an unreliable and gutless turd.

Re: Chevy re enters Class 6 Truck Market

I hear the GM/Navistar joint venture for medium duty conventional trucks is on schedule. Look for more information later this year. The Chevy version will be out in 2018. Sorry, don't have any more information at this time.

There are rumors Isuzu will introduce a larger tandem axle cabover. I figure there will be a Chevy version too.

There are actually good reasons for that, even though it doesn't seem right from a historical standpoint. These days, GMC dealers sell a LOT more loaded expensive Sierra's and Denali's than they do plain-jane commercial trucks, and it really doesn't make sense distributing the exact same commercial trucks through 2 different dealership networks. So, the decision was made to brand all the commercial-only trucks Chevy and develop Chevy commercial truck centers. It is counter-productive to have GM dealers compete with each other too much. I remember the mess when GM gave Chevy commercial truck dealers GMC heavy trucks to sell. It was even worse with the whole Volvo/White/GMC thing in the late 80's.

Remember that almost all commercial truck sales are low-bid fleet sales. Hard for a commercial dealer to make a good go of it. Having one network (Chevy) selling commercial trucks, and limiting to a certain extent the number of dealers out there will help those commercial truck dealers remain profitable and competitive. I really think GM is starting to learn from past mistakes, and this is an example.

You know, I have to admit it would be really cool if someday GM brought back the GMC 5 Star General as a premium over-the-road tractor, even if they did have sell it at Chevy commercial truck dealers!

I agree.

They should have never sold out in the first place in my opinion. They should have worked it out somehow.
