Where to go in California

Flying out to California tomorrow morning, unless they pull a United, itll be for 10 days. Any suggestions where to go?

Saturday the 13th will be in Thousand Oaks.
Sunday the 14th-16th San Fransisco.
West Hollywood 16th-18th.
Huntington Beach late 18th to the 22nd.

We've got the tourist stuff down, but the hot rod shops and such we want to know about. Were going to Donut Derelicts and Hollywood Hotrods / Old Crow. We will probably go to Kibbe Tech in Thousand Oaks.

Personally I'd like to see some traditionalist hot rod shops. Wish Delmos was still in Burbank.

Re: Where to go in California

I've driven the PCH the past two years, spending most of the time in SoCal. We just got back from 9 days on Sunday.

Chip Fooses shop is blocks away from the beach in Huntington Beach. They do tours M-F from noon to 1 ONLY. I didn't get to meet him, but I ran into his shop manager at a car show that night and he told me that Chip is *usually* there and depending on how busy he is/etc is when he comes out at the end or not. He told me that if you hung around after the tour and asked nicely if Chip was around, he might come and hang out for a few minutes. Lesson Learned. My wife and I are planning to do a VRBO for an entire week next summer in Huntington Beach, so I'll try again.

Just down the road is Classic Industries.

If you drive up to Pamona, there's a couple hot rod Museums and the original SoCal speed shop. They do tours as well, but only at certain times M-F. I can't remember if they're posted online or not, you may have to call to ask. I think they were 11-noon. We got there at 9 and I explained we couldn't hang around, so they let me poke around the shop for a few minutes. When you go to the SoCal speed shop (they will have a bunch of brand new steel, but traditional style hot rods) they'll give a list of 4 or 5 local places that are popular shops/museums, we just didn't have the time. Again, when we go next year, I plan to make a day of car stuff in Pamona.

John Force also has a museum/shop about 40 minutes from Huntington Beach, but we didn't have time to make it there.

Check this for car shows. I was able to go to a local cruise night in Huntington Beach. Freakin cool.

I'm sure you've got all the SF tourist stuff covered
If you end up in wine country let me know
I'm on a mini vacation right now but told my wife I would be home before Mother's Day
No museums or anything in our town
But there is some good wine and beer
I'll buy you one and show you a few chevy trucks if you would like

I'll pm my info
If it works it works. If not have a great trip

Re: Where to go in California

Well if your in Huntington you are in Orange County. Reids is not a tourist stop but it's a famous old parts store for Rodders. I pop in there with my son now and again. It's about 20 minutes inland. You could eat at Watsons(landmark) or the Filling station(an old gas station turned deli) http://www.reidsrodparts.com

The truck and car shop is right up the street from that, if your curious of their operation. Or if you want to cuss them in person... haha!

If you are in Hollywood peterons. It's more time for sure give a half day. I liked the old museum better.. but you can't please everyone!

Have fun!

Re: Where to go in California

All of the above! One of my favorites is the Los Angeles County Coroners Office, right off the 5 freeway. "Skeletons in the Closet" is the name of their gift shop. Great gift ideas, cool parking pass suitable for framing. The profit goes to a great cause, not the county. Dare to be different.

Re: Where to go in California

Where to go in California, Hmmm. East until you hit the border, and quickly!!
(just kidding, it's the land of not quite right and the land of VERY right, all rolled into one - I have to admit I miss it a lot).

BUT, seriously, if you can stick around an extra weekend to make this show in Santa Maria, it's a very good one - West Coast Kustoms (used to be in Paso Robles). 27-29 May http://www.westcoastkustoms.com/showinfo.html

Even if you can't, hope you have a great trip. Wait, I guess it's started already!

And a tip for SF...

Google where the Nude beaches are... and don't go there. Ever.
