Where/How To Begin
I purchased a 67k20 one owner last year. It had been rolled, so most of the body is dented.
The good: floor pans including 4th door pan and the outside of 4th door body. Also, I will remove the dash assembly. I can't use this as the build, beta amuse it was rolled on windshield and d/d wouldn't close. Rockers on dd,pd,and 3rd door no good. I have a 72c20 that has bad floor pans including rust down through the 4th door floor. It will need rockers. I am thinking to cut out good parts on 67 and use them in the 72. Both Suburbans have the doors off. How would you guys start this project? Or do I sell these and get a good body?

I depends on how much experience you have at doing this type of work. I wouldn't recommend a project like this for someone that is inexperienced at cutting, chopping, fitting and welding. You are talking some pretty extensive work. If you do decide to proceed with the body on the frame, I would put new body mounts under it and criss-cross brace the body and door openings with 3/4" thin wall conduit first. LockDoc

No experience! Maybe I should look for a better body!

Re: Where/How To Begin
If I were you I would look for a better project. I have found it is way cheaper and easier to start with a good truck/suburban than start repairing a rough one. It all depends on your skill level though. If you are a good body guy and/or welder perhaps you can fix up a rough one and even enjoy it.
I used to buy anything and fix it up, but now since I am getting older (and wiser) I make sure to buy something I can drive home. My wife and I are into cars, and have bought many rollers or parts cars over the years, but now we have the "must drive home" rule. No rust buckets and no cars missing too many parts. You save a ton of money and time. She just bought a 72 Blazer and it needs a lot of work, but it is all there and drivable. |

Re: Where/How To Begin
It sounds like a pretty ambitious project for your experience level. I agree with the others and endorse looking for a better body. At least until you get some more experience. Maybe find some one local who has the experience and is willing to walk you through the project. If you find one with better floors and body mounts, you could then start building your skills by doing the rockers. Front rocker replacement is fairly easy and there is lots of information out there to help you. (Suburbans have some rocker difference's but they are pretty well documented.). There are some tools that will be required, as well as a boat load of patience. Also be careful to check for cowl rust. It can be a real challenge to fix.

Re: Where/How To Begin
I think you guys are right. I am really at a point in my life that I could look for a better body and get rid of the clutter that I have!
I really want to restore the 67K20 and then Cupcake as well(71K20). I have 3 suburban parts vehicles that I would let go reasonably. They still do have some good body panels and some have running gear. I was thinking that I would post a for sale ad.

Re: Where/How To Begin
It is my ad, but decided to keep the blue body and put it on my 67. I'll have to replace the rockers and there is some rust by the windshield, but pretty rust-free.

Re: Where/How To Begin
I thought about that. I started taking the rockers off tonight. I was looking at the rust at the windshield area and thinking"maybe it would be better to find a really good body".
