Re: Power steering conversion?
thanks for the heads up guys.
I couldn't agree more, going with factory parts is the way to go, but I was just explaining my situation. edit: I just noticed that CPP sells factory reconditioned steering boxes, but with a quicker 3.5 turn lock to lock ratio...

Re: Power steering conversion?
We've put a power steering unit in. (original was not power). Will the rag joint need replacing or was a manual one strong enough/compatible?
Thanks.

Re: Power steering conversion?
Where did you purchase that power steering pump? I am having a very hard time sourcing one with that style reservoir.

Re: Power steering conversion?
If you met me in person you'd judge me a weirdo. Look up "socially awkward" in the dictionary, that's me. My place in life is working by myself in my shop every waking moment. Talking to people face to face I can't do very well. There's a reason I never give out my phone number or shop address. I can text okay, but usually go weeks without ever answering my phone. Somehow I'm good at my real job but only because I'm at the same fire station with the same 3 guys year after year, and they know how my brain works.

Re: Power steering conversion?
With the info you give you have had to spend a lot of time under, over, in and around these old trucks.

Re: Power steering conversion?
dujobu,
I bought my used GM reservoir from Kenny's Trucks in Mounds OK. The brackets were sourced from a local salvage yard. The gear box was also used from a salvage yard. I replaced the hoses from a local NAPA.

Re: Power steering conversion?
what pump did you use (length of pump measured from the engine block / year of pump / back set of pulley) if you have any of this info, I am having problems finding the correct pulley see attached photo. Thank you!

Re: Power steering conversion?
Budman
I have attached a couple of pictures of my set up. I used pulleys from a mid-1970's small block with a short water pump. You should be able to find the pulleys on V-belt small blocks of the 1970's. The front of the power steering pump lines up with the front of the harmonic balancer. Also, my balancer pulley has three grooves, but there is almost no space between the V-groove channels. I see yours has a space between the first and second groove, which might be the problem.

Re: Power steering conversion?
Thank you all I got it all fixed with the help of fellow forum member 60-63 with the correct pulley gm part number 3791943 this pulley lined right up with the setup that I have, I guess the reason that it was so hard to find is that it is actually a 6 cylinder pulley, and most people haven't seen a factory AC pulley setup. So hopefully in the future when someone has the same problem I did they will be able to fix it without going through and purchasing 3 different pulley like I did.
