Patima 1962 c10 stepside

Yes I know I did not spell patina right but that's how my neighbor back when i was in garden grove,ca would call my first vehicle which was a 64 c10 shorty. PATIMA so I got a second chance on a shortbed and I am hoping nothing gets in my way of the build and keeping it for the rest of my life. I bought it this past sunday. Been watching it on craiglist for almost 2 months. Finally!!!! I love these 60-66 so much. its ridiculous.

Anywho its a 1962 c10 short stepper as you can see. It has some rot on the floors and some patch that were riveted/bolted on but the good thing is the roof and pillars are cancer free. The motor is either a 283 or 327 with a 4speed granny low. I want to convert it to an automatic but not sure between the sluggish th350 or 700r.

Rear end the previous owners swapped out a 3/4 ton for a 67-68 chevelle 10 bolt. its just barely hanging in there its not centered but I think im going to find an original rear end . Does anyone know if all 60-66 differential will bolt up? But forsure i have a 60-62 lined up to buy. Well I will keep you all updated on this build. I will ad more pictures sorry not the best i took so far but my dad is in the picture giving the approvable. Thanks Dad for inspiring me and getting me into the 60-66 chevy truck era!

Welcome. Looks like a nice little short bed to start out with. Keep us posted.

I would go with a '63-'70 truck 12 bolt. That will give you better parts availability including options for highway friendly gears. The one drawback is that you will have to move the trailing arm mounts.

Don't know much on swaps but why would it need to be moved? I do think think the 63-70 would be best with the inline 250/th350 swap I am going with. My Neighbor down the road is going to start helping me with an inline 250 he has sitting arouund. Here are some photos of the 67-68?? chevelle rear end not sure if it really is thats just what previous owner said. The coils are not correct and is sketchy. they didnt even put retainer cups in it. Just holding on with bolt NOT cool. Should be an easy swap out i think. It does seem to have the correct trailer arms for this truck.

Re: Patima 1962 c10 stepside

I suggested the '63-'70 truck 12 bolt because you said you were going to change the Chevelle 10 bolt for an original rear end. The Eaton HO32/33 differential typically came with 3.90 gears. The aftermarket does offer 3.38 gears, but the rest of the parts availability for those differentials are often not so good. It looks like that Chevelle differential is a bit too wide for the truck.

Ok I am going to try and find one from 63-70 c10. I was told I should look for one that came originaly with an automatic because i am converting mine to a th350. As for the chevelle rear end being to wide in the photo is because its not center it has shifted over because its not bolted down correctly. I just dont want to deal witht that rear end being different bolt pattern anyways. Thanks for your advice Captainfab.

Re: Patima 1962 c10 stepside

You might be able to find a '63-'70 12 bolt with 3.08 gears. They were available. Of course this is assuming you want to stay with 6 lug. 5 lug conversion axles are available, but you might be better off to start with a '71-'82 12 bolt or a '79-'87 10 bolt even thought they are 1.5" wider. That will depend on your budget and what you want to run for tires. The stepsides have less room for tires than a fleetside.

Re: Patima 1962 c10 stepside

Slow build do to budget. Story of most of our lives but anywho I just been cleaning it up. I want to sand the back half of frame soon and spray it. But started collecting the rear brakes parts. I am missing the part that the ebrake line connects to and can not find it anywhere. I also am planning on swapping the v8/4speed for a inline 250/th350. My dad and I took out the chevelle rear end because it was missing to many parts did not have the perches welded on so that cause the rear end to shift over. So found an eaton rear diff and installed it with original stock springs but driveshaft is to long so once i switch engine/trans I will find a one piece driveshaft. I will lower this truck later but for now it will be best to keep it stock height so I can crawl under easier to remove the engine/trans. I am far from being a mechanic. owned about 6 of these trucks but I give all the credit to my dad. I want this to be our last build and the one I keep till the end of my days. I almost sold this and I back out. Means to much to me.
