Stalling issue - need advice
I've had the truck for 3 years and never had this issue before. I washed the truck today since it was filthy. After that I made a slight adjustment to the curb idle speed (raising it from 500 to 650, just to see any performance difference). Went for a drive and after about a mile, the truck completely died on me as I came to a stop sign. I was able to get it started after a couple tries. A few blocks later, it did it again. I went home and adjusted it back to 500 (where it has been for the last year). Drove it again and the same thing happened. When I finally got it started, it smells like it is running really rich now. I have an HEI Distributor and Holley 670 Street Avenger carb with a small block 350/290. Not sure what it could be, possible float bowl issue?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Not being disrespectful, but have to ask: are you sure the screw you turned both times was the idle speed adjustment screw?

Could it be possible the secondaries are open a tiny bit causing it to be way to rich if they are dripping fuel or lean if they are not dripping, try closing them by hand

Hi, did you wash the engine or could water have got into the distributor? I have seen lots of hei's get wet under the coil cover. They will act just like what you are describing.

Re: Stalling issue - need advice
I didn't wash the engine, but I guess it could be possible the distributor got wet in the process of washing the truck.

It may be worth pulling the coil cover off and looking for humidity inside under the coil.

Re: Stalling issue - need advice
If not moisture in the distributor, have you looked for any vacuum lines that may have come off?

Re: Stalling issue - need advice
Random guess - Do you have the factory air cleaner? Maybe you unhooked the vacuum line for the Thermac to take it off to adjust the idle and forgot to reconnect it?

Re: Stalling issue - need advice
Water could have infiltrated the HEI system if the Cowl to Hood rubber seal is either missing or degraded.
I have seen trucks with no seal literally stop in the middle of the road during a rain shower. Water drops straight down onto the distributor... LMC have the seals # 38-7410 for $ 8.99 Remove the HEI cap and coil, remove the coil and make sure it is totally dry...make sure the inside of the HEI unit is totally dry... Hope this helps |
