Need help restoring 1965 Gmc

Hey everybody,

So first off I have zero experience restoring anything and I really don't know anything about cars/trucks except how fix minor things like lights or change the oil. The truck I want to restore is in fairly good condition, needs some minor body work and painting and I want to rebuild the 292 straight six. It burns oil, starts if you pour gas into the carb but thats the only way. What parts do these engines need for rebuild and where could I get them in Canada?

To rebuild the 292 is simple and easy. Most of your parts can be purchased through Ebay and Summit Racing. Burning oil is a sign of bad rings....especially as bad as it sounds. What is the mileage on that thing?

I believe you'll have to order from the USA for parts. Long as you have internet you'll be fine. Shipping will be the beater though. Glad you want to keep the 292. Nice change rather than another small block.

Not quite sure of the mileage. Looks really worn though. I'll give that a try! I kind of want to rebuild everything that would basically reset the mileage so its in pretty much factory condition. What kind of parts would I need for that? I don't even know all the parts that make up an engine so I have some learning to do.

Well there are many factors that come to play in rebuilding a motor. It's not just taking out old parts and replacing with new. There is machining involved to do it right. I HIGHLY suggest learning about this. Take the time to study on engines. I have and still learning new stuff after 12 years. Takes time and effort. Engines are really easy to understand(most of the time) and google with animated videos will be your best friend. Learn all the parts in a motor and what purpose they serve and how they work. Then look at how to vidoes on rebuilding engines. Engines are air pumps put together Precisely and Timed. Small things are critical. The 292 will be a super easy engine to learn off of. I would also recommend getting a 1965 GMC Shop manual. It will give you specs and pictures.

292s were a very common eng here (Canada). no problem getting parts or a machine shop to do any work on them unless their igloos melted there in Lethbridge
