Rochester/Edelbrock Carb and Vacuum Questions

I have a few questions on the Rochester carb set up. What is the electric piece in picture 1? I have read that it is possibly an AC solenoid that picks up the rpm's when the AC is turned on. My truck never had AC.

In picture two, I assume that is the electric choke.

Also in picture two, I assume the vacuum line is for the transmission.

When I install the edelbrock, I was planning on using the same manifold port for the transmission. My charcoal canister is cracked and I would like to bypass it. The plan is to run PCV to big port on carb, and the distributor vacuum to the drivers side small port (non-egr) and cap the passenger side small port on the carb. This may be dumb a question, but here goes - can I tee the pvc and carb line to tie in the fuel vent line? It is currently laying underneath the canister. That is the port that cracked off the canister.

Picture one is the anti diesel solenoid, turns on with the key and cracks the throttle open to idle setting.
Transmissions modulator vacuum connection at top of picture 2. Bottom of pic 2 is the transmission controlled spark solenoid, it only allows vacuum advance in 3rd gear.

Thank you. So I assume picture 1 gets connected to the electric choke on the edelbrock, and what to do with the other wire?

You can't run the pcv off the carb vent. Run the pcv off the large tube on the base of the carb. If you are refering to the other terminal on the electric choke, it is grounded.

That's what I was referring, the large vacuum tube on the base of the carb, between the two smaller ports. Thanks for the help. The other wire was for the vacuum advance solenoid. Sounds like I can let it disconnected. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Rochester/Edelbrock Carb and Vacuum Questions

Oh, btw, keep all the bolts, solenoid, air cleaner etc, and when you get tired of it not starting up properly and not running right you can put the proper intake and carb back on it and have a good running, fiddle free set up. Your engine is all stock and I bet it runs great that way, you will eventually hate the intake and carb your about to install...

Re: Rochester/Edelbrock Carb and Vacuum Questions

Will do. I had the thought that it may end up back on.

Re: Rochester/Edelbrock Carb and Vacuum Questions

Did you already buy the intake and carb? What did you buy?
Did you buy the throttle ball and trans kick down connection?
Post a pic of the 2bbl throttle cable connection at the carb and I will try to tell you if it will fit the new carb.

Re: Rochester/Edelbrock Carb and Vacuum Questions

Edelbrock 1406 electric choke 600 (really considered 500)and 2701 intake with felpro gaskets. I ordered an edelbrock 'connector/fitting kit' for kickdown and the throttle cable adapter. I'll post pictures tonight of the current setup, along with what I ordered.

Re: Rochester/Edelbrock Carb and Vacuum Questions

I saw your post about your install parts, I see you switching to hei too, you can run that off the same wire as the choke if you want, plenty of wire size and power there for both.
Don't use the original coil wire as That wire has built in resistance.
If you decide to use the coil circuit then, remove the wire at the engine wiring harness connector where it connects to the fuse box. The engine and lighting harness are secured with a 3/8 bolt, once the engine connector is removed, trace the coil wire and remove it from the connector by squeezing the tab at the base to release the tab and push it through. Tape off the removed wire for possible future changing back to points.
The connector is a packard 56 male, buy a new one and run a new wire to the hei.
