Another use for CLR

I bought a $20 grill shell a little while back, it had been laying in the back of a truck bed for many years and had heavy green and black stains. I got it out yesterday with the intent of cleaning it up. I washed it with dish detergent to get the heavy crud off, but it still didn't look too good. Took some lacquer thinner and worked on it for about 30 minutes...still not looking too great?

I thought well it may be time to strip and polish?? But that look wouldn't fit my driver truck. Then I thought about CLR....I'll give it a try.

Wow, what a difference!! about 10 minutes and the grill looked awesome. took off all the staining and rough texture from the black and green crud. just thought I'd share.

That looks great. Too bad it doesn't take out dents. Mines too banged up to polish.

I wish I could find a grill shell like that for $20.

Lol, CLR doesn't remove dents for sure. The grill shell looked pretty bad and I questioned if it would ever be presentable again. But I'm very pleased with the outcome. It shows better in the pics then it really is....has its share of scratches across the top, but overall its very straight. Great for my driver.

I'm working on mine now. Slow going. Polishing it out. Looks good but it's going to take a lot of man hours to do the whole thing. Anyone have any suggestions? Hand rubbing with Mothers metal polish.

Presumably you were able to get the anodizing off of it before you started polishing?? If not, maybe you are having to polishing through the anodize surface before you get to the aluminum??

Yeah, that's probably the problem.

Easy off oven cleaner will remove the factory anodizing. Be sure to wash and rinse well afterward to deactivate the easy off. Polish up and protect it in some way and you should be good for years with a little touch up from time to time. Or you could re-clear?
