Re: How much time to install these parts?
I think if you can find a fellow enthusiast who would work for $20 to $30 an hour you could cut that estimate down to about 1/4.
Shops have their labour rate and if they have no trouble filling it, it is not in their best interests to do you any favours. |

Where do we draw the line between "real hot rodders" and "checkbook rodders"? If a guy does his own suspension brakes and other mechanicals, but farms out the paint and upholstery..what category do they fit into? |

Re: How much time to install these parts?
Wow, seems you really misunderstood what I was saying. My point is, if you are not going to do something (and there is nothing wrong with that), you need to be prepared to pay top dollar to have the work done for you. I certainly don't think that is a "cancerous" attitude.

I agree with your clarification and it goes without saying. If you hire someone (for anything) you are at their mercy both in the cost and craftsmanship they provide. Unfortunately high end and high dollar don't necessarily correlate, but that's a whole other topic. |

Re: How much time to install these parts?
I don't think it's derogatory at all. I'll use the ultimate example: Jay Leno. He is a car guy through and through. He does lots of work on his collection, but pays well to have cars restored, built, and maintained. He has a big checkbook, lol.
If you can't work on a vehicle (not allowed to, don't have the ability, don't have the tools, whatever), who cares if you pay someone to do it? You're a checkbook hot rodder. At least you have a vintage ride. Doesn't matter who built it. |

It's a situation of context matters, try this experiment if you can't understand my position. Hop over to the build section and comment "You are a great checkbook hot rodder" everywhere you see where someone has gotten something back from the body shop, parts back from a powder coater, got an order in from Porterbuilt, got their crate engine in....see how many friends it makes you. Sorry for derailing your thread, op. Lol. Last edited by Mack B; 08-23-2017 at 07:48 PM. Reason: Siri ninja edited me |

Re: How much time to install these parts?
Okay, lets back this down. There are VERY few people who can build/do everything for any vehicle and not need to farm out some aspect of it. That's doesn't mean they are not a real hot rodder or only a "checkbook hot rodder". That just means they know the limits of their time, space, tools, knowledge, etc. and needs a pro to finish whatever they need done.
We need to stop the infighting within the classic/custom car/truck community. We already have law makers who continue to put the screws to us with the ideal of eventually killing our hobby. We all need to be working together, to fight these folks as one, to keep our loved hobby/lifestyle around. If not, we'll all be driving electric powered "appliances". Don't think that's going to happen... well it is already starting to take root in other countries.

That makes you a check book rodder. Somethings it's cheaper safer and more cost effective to pay for. I'm lucky to have about all the tools and machines needed to do most thing. But even myself I will pay for somethings. Just finished my frame and I took it to an alligment shop that specialist is modified frames and suspension to get it checked. Back to his problem of wanting work done. Since you have no place to work on the truck and it sounds like you could do the work. Could you rent a storage unit for a month and do it there. I have a friend that travels for work and that is what he does. Another way would be to rent a garage for a month. For ten thousand dollars you could build you a nice garage to do the work then sell it in the end. |

Re: How much time to install these parts?
The trade that I am really not good at is body work. I have heard body men say they are really scared of the mechanical stuff. I'd happily trade work if I could find one of those fellows in the present where we could be of mutual benefit by trading work.
