Intake Manifold

I was pulling the carb to get cleaned and tuned up along with distributor cap and rotor, and the vacuum advance. I took a few pictures when I was in the area.

I saw the number on the intake and it was a 3883948 GM1. A quick search says it's a off a 66-67 Vette, Camero, or Chevell. I get it may not be the the original motor but it's 454 with a Rodchester 4 Barrel. Can anyone tell me what style intake this is? Oval, rectangle, worth keep on there. Is is a good intake for a BBC? Is it worth keep it on there?

I do have a Weiand stealth oval port but it had a Holley carb on it. Will it work with a Rodchester 4 barrel?

From what I can find, that Weiand intake is designed for Holley and Edelbrock "square" base carbs. You could use the Quadrajet, but it would require an adapter, and I've never had one that worked worth a darn.

The intake you have is an oval port. Unless you plan to change out your cam, add headers, or just want to shave a few pounds off the front of your truck, I think you're way ahead of the game sticking with what you have. Just my .02...

An adapter is just a piece of metal with holes, no witch craft there. Thousand of people use them and spacers daily.
Yes, the aftermarket intake is better. Lighter too. No downsides to using it besides having to buy an adapter.

The problem with the adapters on my two 454s was that the attachments to the carburetor and air cleaner did not line up, so you have to cobble up something to make it work. Small block - no problem, big block - problem. Also, if you have smog stuff like my 83 you have more adaptation issues. Smog test is required on my 83 in AZ.

The next question is with the intake numbers is this motor a 396 or something more? Could someone put this intake on 454?

I will pulls valve cover later this week and run the heads.

I pulled a Valve Cover this afternoon and found I have 049 heads. This does not make any since to me. An early intake 66-69. Then 70-73 heads...... I'm confused

Judging from the choke oven the original intake is from the late seventies or early eighties.

That may be, but the casting numbers say it is from a small horse 396/427. It is the same intake I had on my 67 Vette.

The heads are open chamber large oval ports. 049 and 781 castings are the most sought after in that category.

I don't remember any chokes having the heat tubes in the sixties. The sixties had the spring type of choke ovens. But I've been wrong before.

If you look closely, what you can see of the casting under the heat tube plate, looks just like it would for the coil spring.

Hmmm....what good eyes you have. My intake on my 89 K30 is set up for a q jet under the throttle body spacer. You gotta lo GM with all the interchangeable stuff.

Well I pulled the intake manifold figured I should put on some new gaskets. While lifting off the intake that is 30-50 lbs intake I got water in the block. I plan on sand blasting it along with valve covers and spray painting it Chevy Blue

Picked up the carb, and the guy said I should plug the two wholes I circled in red. The two holes go the Exhaust port on the intake. Has anyone else done this? What is the effect of plugging the holes
