Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

I have a 68,C-10 (anniversary special)
The interior is gold and white. My armrests have a brownish stain on them.I don't know what caused the stain. It's not a spot but a general brown tint.
I've tried soap and upholstery cleaner but,so far nothing is working!
What will work?
Thanks,Mike.

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

I have good luck with taking simple green with hot water...spray it and let it sit, then take a toothbrush with goop handcleaner on it and work that into the hot water simple green mixture.

I have had good results with Oxy-Clean laundry spot cleaner spray on my parchment vinyl and seat belts. Spray on, use a soft bristle brush, rinse and let dry in the sun. Gets just about everything out. Finish with some 303 protectant or armor all.

I have used a product called Krud Kutter with really good results. You can get it at Home Depot.

I stopped letting my German Shepard sit on my white upholstery. No more brown spots

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

Could be ground in dirt, or the surface of the vinyl has oxidized over the years. On my Buick, reupholstery was the answer, but try the cleaning mentioned methods first. None of the materials for upholstery seem to be as good as what the factory did.

I have had some good results on white vinyl using Lestoil and hot water,it seems to loosen any built up crud that gets embedded in the grain of the vinyl

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

There are some strong cleaners. Spray Nine works weally well but it will ruin plasticinterior parts. I've had good luck recently using Purple Power. I'd remove and soak on a pretty strong solution, then scrub, let dry. Lestoil and Pinesol are really strong but not sure if harmless on vinyl. Probably ok.

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

Thanks everyone so far!
My interior is all original materials.
It's the door armrests that are the problem.
Top and inside parts of the armrests is where the stain is.Worse on drivers side.
Picture of the passenger side---

Bleech White whitewall tire cleaner. When all else fails this is the stuff I use. This is potent stuff so if you use it be sure to test it in an unseen spot first and make sure he doesn't eat the vinyl or discolor. Has saved me when nothing else could do the job.

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

Lots'a good ideas. Not sure how durable that material is, would be my main concern.
I wonder if Marhyde makes a white vinyl dye? If they do, I'd be tempted to try some of the less aggressive stuff mention here, and spray them with dye, IF they don't clean up to your approval....

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

Armrests are heat formed foam injected thick vinyl ,There is no fabric back. That looks like UV burn and it is not dirt/grease and won't clean off . Time to redye them . after removing them from the door use a good cleaner, Then clean again using lacquer thinner to remove any gloss still left ,Then use Bulldog adhesion promoter to help bind the final color , 1-2 very light coats works better than 1 heavy one .In this case less is better .

Then use Sem 15103 color coat to finish

http://www.tcpglobal.com/SEM-VCS-CC_3.html#.WgIig3ZOnIU

This is the closest color , an exact color match can be done by your local auto interior shop or check in your area for a automotive vinyl repair specialist in your yellow pages .

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

The original owner before me kept it inside and I've always kept it inside too.
My wife says it is from the oil in skin that stained them.
I even keep the dash pad and seats covered when it's inside.
I got some courage up today and tried Purple Power on the drivers side armrest.Helped some so,I went to full strength and soaked it.Then, used a very soft brass wire brush on it.
Now,it's looking a lot better, but you can still see the stains, and it looks much better than the passenger side now.
Now,the wife suggests to use ammonia on it.
I'm hoping someone comes up with more ideas before I ruin one of them!
Mike.

Your wife is right . Vinyl has pores the oil and perspiration soaks in over time and acts like suntan lotion .

I second this. Used it on my Parchment GTO interior. It cleaned everything up great except for one spot on the rear seat that has never came clean to this day. I bought the car in 84.

I knew there must be a good reason the dozens of arm rests I've soaked in Purple Power never had any issues. I wouldn't think getting soaked once would cause cloth to rot, either.

Re: Cleaning brown stain from white armrests?

Wonder if white shoe polish would work you would have to test it in a non conspicuous spot.
