Borrowed this pic from 71blksuper4x4. Yes, the 71-72 shifters are different, they go straight up and the 70's bend over to the left. In pic he is holding the 70 model one.

Yes the 70 has a bend towards the driver so the upper part of the shifter is at an angle.
