Door latch problem
Let me start with the truck itself.
I drove this truck in high school (long time ago), it belonged to my father. Some transmission issues parked it for many years, and a few years back it was sold to a close family friend, and I helped swap the tranny and do some motor work (by "helped", I mean I did the work, and the kid fed me beer). A couple weeks ago, I bought it back, and am now fixing it for my daughter. The first picture LOOKS like my truck, the second one actually is my truck.

So, now to my issue.
Driver-side door won't latch properly. If you try to close the door, it bangs against the latch as if the latch was closed. So you have to hold the handle (from either inside or outside) to get past the first "catch", and then release the handle and pull (or push) the door to close and latch fully. Before I tear into this door, what am I going to be looking for? It doesn't appear to be a traditional latch like the next generation (73-87),

Also check your door hinge bushing. Easy to fix and often causing latch and alignment issues

Sometimes you can rotate the clasp in the door and it will close and latch properly. The hinge pins will wear out over time as well as latch and locking mechanisms. The striker in the door pillar should have shim stacks behind it. The four bolts in the striker are adjustable allowing the striker to be moved in any necessary direction to fine tune the line up so the door opens, closes, and locks properly. If the door is rubbing the pillar, or if the striker is contacting the door skin then shims will need too be removed. If the latch is not quite centered in the striker opening then you may need to add shims. Often a hinge pin is worn to the point where the door will hang or tilt.
