Gas Cap Differences

Hi -

I need a new locking gas cap for my 70.
I see there are ones for 70 and earlier, 71 and 72. Whats the difference? I do not think I have the big vent line running up the B pillar on the passenger side and my current cap looks like the 71/72 cap.
I'm thinking its the difference between vented and non-vented and I should go with the same style cap i have.

Re: Gas Cap Differences

The filler necks are different sizes, so there are two different size gas caps.

You sure your in-cab is the original? Lots of tanks get changed over the years due to rust out. Look for the vent tube on the right hand side of the tank. '71 and '72 both had EEC style tanks.

I moved my tank to under the bed behind the rear axle on my '71 4x4. Weight helps a bit with traction. I still have the locking gas cap I used for the original tank if you can't find what you need. Doesn't fit my current fuel filler as it is a newer threaded style.

I have a pipe under the truck next to the fuel line, but its not connected to anything (and 2-port fuel pump, not 3), and I didn't see any tubing going up the B pillar from the tank. Makes me think I have a replacement tank requiring the vented cap. Maybe that's why I DONT get fumes in the cab... Hmmmm....
