VIN and SPID question

This might be a dumb question, but here goes. From the VIN number can you tell what options the truck had from the factory or can you only tell that from the SPID? If it is only found on the SPID is it possible to get a new SPID made from just the VIN?

Thanks in advance Jothan

Re: VIN and SPID question

Vin will tell a little but most of the options will be the spid.

Re: VIN and SPID question

For what model year?

If a vehicle was built in Canada or built in the US for Canadian usage then build information can be accessed through GM of Canada vintage vehicle services http://www.vintagevehicleservices.com/options.html. You can sent them your VIN and $35 and they will provide the content and general production volume information.

Domestic vehicle information can be obtained through the GM Heritage Center, for vehicles starting in 1976 or 1977

http://www.gmmediaarchive.com/?page=1

That's $50 and they will return your original invoice, complete with selling dealer, build date information, option content and pricing.

If you fall outside either of those buckets then the information is no longer available unless you can find a build sheet inside your vehicle somewhere. The VIN has some rudimentary coding (like powertrain and model information) but doesn't go as far as exterior color or interior trim.

Truck is a 68 c10 built in Janesville, just trying to determine what options it came with. Judging from your post it looks like I'm going to be out of luck.

Re: VIN and SPID question

Yes you are out of luck. The only thing you can glean from the VIN is:
2wd vs 4wd
I6 vs V8
1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton
Model year
Pickup vs burb etc
Build plant

Re: VIN and SPID question

We are lucky up in Canada to have the GM Heritage service like Keith mentioned. Here is what the print out looks like with all the factory installed options as well as production date, model #, Dealer & color.
