Replaced all the steering components and wheel is hard

I just replaced the steering stuff in the 87. I put new lines, new pump and new gear box on. I filled it up, turned the wheel 5 times each direction with the front tires off the ground, motor off.

Filled it up, started the truck and tried to move the steering wheel and it's super hard to turn the wheel and the pump is making funky noises. Is my belt too tight? Gear box tension need to be reduced via the set screw?

Do it again same way with motor running you still have air in the system or the lines are crossed on the steering box maybe

Got her done. It was low on fluid and there was a TON of air in it. I have done complete steering component swaps before and I have never used that much fluid. It took like 3-3.5 quarts from bone dry. It's quiet as a mouse, steers perfectly and no leaks.

Cool! I recently also found out that STEERING is an awful handy thing to be able to do! Congrats.

Good info, I'm about to do the same, I have a bunch of play when just going straight and know I need a new gear box. Where did you source yours from?

Picked up an AC Delco reman unit from Amazon. It was like $189 with a $75 rebate

Could I trouble you for a part number please? Just want to be sure it's the right one. Thank you in advance!

I found this on Amazon.

Thats it! The price jumped a little but still worth it. If you have an Amazon account, add it to your cart and check it daily. Sometimes the prices fluctuate and you could save $5-$20 on any given day

Thanks for the peace of mind knowing I'll be buying the right part! Glad you got yours sorted out. I'll be sure to have plenty of fluid on hand and bleed out all the air. Thanks again!
