Does anyone make bigger mirrors that mount like the old ones do?
I know the original mirrors mount with a bolt that goes through the mirror arm, and it gets held on with a nut. Does anyone make a bigger mirrors that will go in the original place where the old mirror mounted to the arm, or one that will go where the mount goes so I don't have to drill bigger holes?

The Truck Shop in Orange, CA - http://www.truckandcarshop.com/6072.html
You can download their PDF catalog. Page 17. There is a 5 inch and a 5-5/8" Round. There are also larger rectangle mirrors.

Would the rectangular ones be a lot bigger than the tiny stock round ones? I can barely see anything in my side mirrors as they stand now. |

I have those mirrors and they are hard to look through at highway speeds because the vibrate. You have to adjust and lock them down a lot too. I prefer the 5" round ones.

Re: Does anyone make bigger mirrors that mount like the old ones do?
They do vibrate on the highway, but it may help (a little) if you get the flexible gasket that goes between the arm and the door skin. Also, the cast iron arms on the earlier models seem (to me) to be a bit more resistant to vibration than the tubular ones. But yeah, they vibrate. The only time it really bugs me is if I'm trying to decide if I see a cop or other important vehicle way back there, then I steady it with my hand to get the "high def" picture.

I have both the rectangle and round ones from truck shop. Well made but my only qualm is the rubber surround on the rectangle one that holds the glass in place seems to cause a whistle at speeds above 45mph. Can be annoying. I am going to try to put some clear silicone on it to stop it.

Re: Does anyone make bigger mirrors that mount like the old ones do?
I just put some cheap parts store 5" mirrors on mine. They are convex, not a big fan of it, takes a bit of getting use to. I do like the size of them. While only nominally larger than the ones that were on there the convex offers larger viewing area. They don't vibrate going down the road.

I went with the rectangular mirrors. They look ok. I got mine from LMC Truck.

Re: Does anyone make bigger mirrors that mount like the old ones do?
I had the same problem dealing with vibration in the original equipment mirrors. I think it was the long, thin arm because the Studebaker mirrors (very similar) and Chevy did the same thing. Chevy even had a better mount (IMHO) and that arm still vibrated. So I am going with the California-type mirrors. They worked on my Studebaker and are much better when towing. Besides, one of the previous owners installed them and the holes are already pre-drilled in the door.
