how often do rear coil springs go bad?

Not lowered, the whole suspension is stk. The rear shocks might have 40 miles on them. I think I bought these but not positive, put them on about a yr ago:

I know I bought white ones cause I painted them black. I'll have to see if I can find the receipt or #s stamped on the shock.
