Security system with GPS?
I have a 1968 Chevy short box 2wd I am almost finished building. I have dumped more money into this thing than I care to think about. With that being said I want to protect my investment the best I can.
I am looking for an aftermarket system that has GPS locating, remote start and electric door locks. My google is turning up $200 and below. This just seems awful cheap? Any recommendations for a quality system?

Re: Security system with GPS?
Get an extra, activated iPhone in it somewhere connected to power. $10 a month for GPS tracking... Like an old iPhone 4s or 5 or something.
For the remote start? Why... I have it on my new silverado and its nice for these cold 47 degree socal winters (turns the seat warmers on) but I don't see a need for it in my old truck. Just another thing to worry about. I don't drive it enough in adverse conditions to need anything like that either. Electric door locks would be cool, but I know my door locks are hard to unlock and don't know if the new technology el-cheapo plastic solenoids would be up to it. Maybe a good set of 70s cadillac ones would do the job, they are beefy. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Security system with GPS?
Obviously remote start if fuel injected not carb.
I installed power locks and alarm system on my truck over the winter The actuators works great. Very strong. Easy to install. Just your run of the mill actuators from Amazon not expensive at all but work great. Installed them on another vehicle and good for 2 yearsa now with alarm and remote start. Crimestopper alarm. Nothing too fancy but works and easy to install Mark

Re: Security system with GPS?
If you want to throw away more money, get a LoJack device installed. Then you can keep sending them money to keep it activated

Re: Security system with GPS?
I realize I cant make anything theft proof, But I would like to maximize the chances of getting it back quickly. I am running the Fitech system on a 454 and have the vintage air system in it. I plan to daily it to work and the remote start would be nice since it runs low 90s-110 degrees most of the summer months. I will check into these systems that were mentioned.

If you've got some edge case like an unmonitored zip code you can drive my truck to, allow me to yawn in advance. So... explain why using LoJack is throwing money away.

There are at least a half a dozen threads on theft protection. Here is one but do a search for even more information.

Looking to see if anyone has a system on a vehicle that works well, It could even be a newer vehicle that is a daily driver or their wifes rig or something.

Re: Security system with GPS?
So, here is a question for the GPS tracking system angle:
Let's say the vehicle is stolen and according to the GPS you track it to a property ....but it is nowhere within sight or vision. Maybe parked around the back or hidden or ? Do you have the right to go in there and look?...in garage windows? or would you? Or do you call the cops and will they do the checking? Will they do it and can they do it without a search warrant? How does that work without this whole deal going south? I mean if the cops don't immediately act on it, the thief could arguably move the vehicle and then maybe check it for a GPS. Just wondering how to make that method of tracking (which I like) work. It might be that the very best 'ending' to a theft is for the vehicle to be immobilized at or near the point of theft where the vehicle shuts down, strands the thief and they bolt....just thinking out loud here. Some backstory: I had my first '72 Highlander stolen from in front of our house in Toronto 20+ years ago and I racked my brains over what I would do if I found it and the guy who took it. I never did get it back. Coley

Re: Security system with GPS?
One difference with LoJack is that YOU don't get to track the vehicle, the Police do it. That means you're not going to get yourself in trouble. It also means it's only useful in locations where police have the equipment and know how to use it (and are willing).
I've never been a cop but I'd imagine tracking a stolen vehicle with radio triangulation and going after it is going to be the most interesting part of your day! I don't see why they wouldn't want to.

Re: Security system with GPS?
We had some Delphi units that had awesome GPS on them and geofencing. The only problem is it uses a OBD2 port that my fitech unit does not offer

Re: Security system with GPS?
I did a lot of research on GPS tracking a few years ago.
The main issue with GPS tracking is that it doesn't work the way it seems like it should. A device with GPS receives 4 time-coded messages. With this, the device can workout length to the satellites and thereby determine location. So most gps devices can only receive messages. So, how can you send a message or track something? There's all sorts of ways of communicating, but very few that package nicely and work well. This is where cellular communication comes in. I plan on writing a phone app (or downloading one if it exists) that determines when the ignition is on, then it will send a text every 1 minute with the time and location. From there it will just write to a file that can be reviewed. It would also send emergency messages.

Re: Security system with GPS?
Back away from the keyboard. You are missing the point of my remark. I paid to keep a LoJack activated in one of my vehicles for several years. This was before the availability of much more cost effective tracking devices. So to my point - the OP has found a system that will probably work very well, but is concerned that it is too inexpensive. I merely suggested that if he wanted to rid his wallet of more money, he could invest in a LoJack, which, according to what I paid to install mine and the activation fees, is substantially more expensive than the system he has found.

Now that you've explained more clearly I would agree with you. Your initial post just came across as "Lojack users = Stupid". To your point, however, my fundamental concern with LoJack is it's a perpetual cost and I keep my cars forever. I've got LoJack in a car I've had for 49 years, because it's special to me after all this time, but 50 years of fees would add up! Actually I have it in two vehicles. It does work however... when I took the "spare" keys for my truck that didn't have the fob on it, I got a call a few minutes later that my truck had been moved.
