Tach disassembly

I’m having trouble disassembling my factory tach so I can see if I can Bead blast the metal. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to remove these nuts on the back. I do not want to destroy these plastic rings which the nuts are in there is just not enough room to use a socket or wrench. If anyone has tips I appreciate it. Thanks

You could try a nut driver and if it is too thick you can sacrifice it by grinding the outer down till it fits inside of the plastic. It looks like the nuts are rusty on the flats so you may have to scrape on those with a real small screw driver. It probably takes a 5/16" socket

I was thinking about grinding down one of my nut drivers but it is very thin at the points of the nuts. I was hoping there is a alternative but I’m thinking I’ll have to go this way. I would destroy them but not sure where to get replacements.

I've just used a good set of small needle nose pliers. The nuts aren't torqued so just turn out enough to get a socket on them.

Oh and put the nut back on the ground post (remove last) while you take off the two plastic washer nuts. Helps from the tach head getting away from you while fighting with the 12v and coil posts.

Find someone with a lathe and have them turn down a 1/4 inch drive 3/8, six point socket enough so that it fits down between the nut and the nylon washer.

Or, you can use a good set of needle nose and what ever Curt said

I bought a cheap nutdriver at a swap meet and ground the outside down on the bench grinder 'till it fit.
