2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

I'm replacing the drive line carrier bearing on a '69 GMC 2500. Referring to the picture below, what I got from NAPA is on the left, what was original is on the right ( minus the actual greasy bearing that is in 5 pieces). It doesn't appear that the replacement bearing I got from NAPA is going to be a bolt on replacement and will require some fabbing. What are you folks using for carrier bearings?

You won't be able to locate the one on the right. I have one very close to what you have on the left. I took some 1/4 inch thick metal and bolted it down on top of the cross member and then mounted that new one to the new metal. No problems...yet.

The original carrier bearing in my 1/2-ton looked like the one on the left. Replacement looks identical to the one on the left. So far it is okay.

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

I had a driveline shop rebuild the driveline for my 67 3/4 ton and they installed a similar bearing to what you have pictured on the left...

it's kind of hard to tell from my pic but it is similar (if not the same)

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

I just finished cutting up a truck I got from Bills Bowtie, a GMC 3/4. It had a aftermarket one like the one on the left but had a spacer that looked like a factory type. It did the same thing that Longhorn did making a spacer.
When we did heavy duty trucks we tried to keep the front drive shaft as close as parallel as possible to the frame, used spacers when needed

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

My son and me replaced the one on his 75 truck and the new one looked like the one on the left. We had to make a spacer for the top so it would fit right. We even went to several part stores to see if they had one like the old one,but were told no. Guess it is something that was changed out. We used a large block of aluminum(?) and shaved it down and drilled mounting holes in it. Just take your time and good luck.

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

When I still had a two-piece on the 71 I relplaced the carrier bearing. Had to make two trips to the parts store though. They gave me the one on the left, and of course it didn't fit. Went back and they had the one on the right in stock as well. Might be worth checking out. Jeff.

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

don't drive that new bearing on too far. Did it come with any spacers? My old bearing had no spacers, and so I didn't include any when I installed my new bearing. Now the bearing housing (like on the left) rubs and squeaks on the driveshaft splash gaurd. I haven't had the time to take it down and pull it back off yet.

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

Has anyone been able to location the rubber for the original carrier bearing that is pictured in the first post on the right side? I can get the bearing but haven't found the rubber.

I would assume it is a type of clamshell where you separate both halves then add the bearing and support material into it...
There is no image of the actual bearing and support so this is what I came up with. They are not cheap either, over $40.00.

NATIONAL HB108 Includes bearing and support; Bore=1.5748", Outer Diameter=2.8346", Width=1.651"
Brg. I.D. 1.5748" / 40mm; Spicer 1410 Series

Re: 2 piece drive line carrier bearing ?

That is the HD carrier bearing. My short step leaf spring truck has that as well. I posted a thread on the board when I replaced it with more info and the name of a driveline shop in San Antonio that had them in stock. I'm pretty sure it came with new rubber surround.
