WTB: 396 motor w/ TH400 transmission

Looking to buy a nice running 396/402 motor with a TH400 transmission. Although I can source a TH400 if I need to. Would prefer 1970, but would consider a 1968-72.

Thanks

Re: WTB: 396 motor w/ TH400 transmission

I have a 69, 396 engine with TH400 from a half ton truck. I drove it a bit and it ran great, when I pulled it I noticed water in the oil, either a head gasket went or the intake started leaking into the crankcase.
Engine $500, pan to intake less accessories
Trans, $250
I could get a shipping quote from Fastenal if interested.

That seems like an easy enough fix. I'm interested. Shipping to Phoenix 85042. Do you have any pics? I’d need the pulleys and brackets for PS and alt if you have them.

Also, is this the one you posted back in April that smokes? I'm looking for an engine that I don't have to take completely apart. Head gaskets are easy. Pulling pistons is not.

Thanks for the pics. What's the consensus on the engine? Is this thing a runner or are there issues with the rings? I really don't want to have to do a complete tear down/rebuild.

Pulleys from a 72, 402
This 402 was in a 72 half ton, it’s for sale too. I drove it too, ran ok, I think it needs a cam, of a mile, trans wouldn’t shift out of 2nd gear.

I'd rather have the '69 396 if the engine is actually ok.

I would do rings and gaskets on the 396, it sat for a long time before I got it.
The 402 I’m just not sure what it would need because it had a crappy Holley 750 on it that just wasn’t right.
