Re: Which engine did you swap to and why?
When my 283 gets tired, I'll probably put in a crate sbc 350. Just because of the simplicity and cost.

Re: Which engine did you swap to and why?
Back in the mid+ 80s the choice was the small block chevy 350. Reason? My options were extremely limited.

Re: Which engine did you swap to and why?
It would take someone with more knowledge of torque curves than I have to give an honest answer. I know that the peak numbers are often comparable but I haven’t put much on a dyno to be an expert. I do know there are a lot of twisted up muscle cars out there due to some big blocks.

Some might like to try a 292 6cyl turbo swap. Just an old truck motor is all that is https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...RKu3K4fwLVVYE3

Re: Which engine did you swap to and why?
I love being the devil incarnate!!!! Seriously though I may just put the old girl back to stock or if I do go with the cheap alternative it'll be the 318 in my beater, it only has 50,000 miles on it and it is already here.

Re: Which engine did you swap to and why?
I've got a pretty decent survivor K20 that came stock with a 350. For me I'm content with keeping it original. It's just a nice weather weekend rig that might only see 1,000 miles locally. Hauling my kayak and camping gear, an occasional run to the lumber yard or hauling stone.. A friend of mine was chiding me about turning it into a beast, but I don't think I want to do that.
Now if I had a total project rig, I'd certainly think about an LS swap. |

Re: Which engine did you swap to and why?
I went the L31 Vortec route. I wanted something that would be reliable, have good power, and decent economy. I didn't want to mess with electronics (other than the HEI) and I like the sound of a Quadrajet when it gets down to business.
I have a roller cam (HT 383 cam), Vortec heads, a one-piece rear main seal, and it should power my Blazer nicely for years to come.
