Brake on drive shaft-help???

1969 c20 307. I have The parking brake that is mounted behind the manual tranny. What's the correct name for it? I need to replace the shoes, and hardware, but I am having a hard time finding a listing for this style of brake.

Re: Brake on drive shaft-help???

You probably have an SM420 out of an earlier model truck.
I have seen parking brakes on the back of these trans.
They are Pre 68 trucks.
What side is the reverse on?

This might help with your parts search.

Re: Brake on drive shaft-help???

Driveline brake is what I have heard them called. Some of our fleet trucks at work had those.

Your best bet will probably be to find someone to reline your pads if they are still able to be used.
There is a place in Nashville, Tn.
Dukes Clutch & Supply that I have had stuff like this repaired years ago.
I think there still in business if you call them they may know someone close to you that does this type work.

Re: Brake on drive shaft-help???

I thought it was an sm465.. 4 gears, reverse is bottom far right,

1 3
2 4 R

It's still a foot brake in the cab... Not a hand brake as well

Re: Brake on drive shaft-help???

You may want to contact a shop that deals with medium duty trucks. C-60s and similar came with that setup.

I have that option on my spid, and during research found that it wasn't supposed to be available on anything less than a C-30 with 11,000lb rear axle. Maybe Canadian trucks were optioned differently from US trucks? Maybe your truck was special ordered by a farmer, like mine? Same year, same option.

Sorry if I mis-informed you.
I was told mine was a sm465.
I will go scrape some grease off of mine tomorrow.
I may have a np435.
Either way.
I think your solution will be having someone reline the pads you have.

Re: Brake on drive shaft-help???

google brake lining material and or rivets to get what you need to put it together. most likely its from a 63 and older 3/4 ton.

Re: Brake on drive shaft-help???

I'll add this little bit of advice from years personal experience with heavy duty foundation brakes...

for something old and somewhat obsolete from the general automotive parts market, I recommend taking your shoes and drum to an established brake/clutch lining shop and have new shoe linings installed and arched to a fresh turned drum.. the drum may only need a cleanup pass or fly cut but needs to be smooth and concentric.. guessing at old part numbers, dimensions, and unknown original application may lead to disappointment..

once the brake assembly is sound and functioning, proper adjustment should be reasonably easy to achieve..

driveline brakes are not themselves obsolete but actually somewhat common in medium duty utility van and box trucks still on the road today.. they are however not very common in general automotive applications where the average person may be shopping for parts or service..

some pictures of the trans and brake assembly as well as the rear axles and brakes on the truck may lead to solving the mystery.. an original driveline brake equipped truck likely will not have signs of cable brakes at the wheel ends.. otherwise, if there are signs of previous cable brakes at the rear wheel ends, the driveline brake may have been a modification made early in the trucks life..

more research of vintage parts catalogs for that year and model may reveal its authenticity as well..

please keep us posted and good luck!
