72 Tilt Steering Column Rebuild Parts

I have my tilt column broke down to about 100 pieces. I will count them before it goes back together just for the sake of knowin'. I would not have guessed that it was that intricate. I don't think I need to buy many parts, but would like to get them all from one dealer. The old column came apart with out self-destructing, thank goodness!

Who has the best reputation for supplying the rebuild parts?

One thing that has me puzzled is how the shift indicator pointer is held in position? Mine is pushed back in the housing beyond flush by about 1/4" (I have not actually removed it from the housing yet) and I'm not sure if I'm missing a spring or if it is broken and just is not sitting properly in it's hole.

Are there any parts worth changing even though they may look good?

I can't tell you where to get parts but I think you will be lucky to find them all in one place. I haven't checked lately but a year or so ago one of the upper bearings was almost impossible to find, and when you did they were priced around 80 bucks each. The plastic cages for the bearings are usually pretty brittle and break easily.

Re: 72 Tilt Steering Column Rebuild Parts

I had luck with Wes at classic heartbeats, he had ( at the time) the last upper bearing on the planet, like Loc Doc said the cage is what will break on the upper bearings, lower bearings seem to be readily available

The pointer should slide in and out being connected to the clear PRNDL plate by a smale plastic clip formed into the pointer, make sure you have the right tilt pointer as a non tilt pointer won't work

I had to add a little tape on the bottom of the plate to keep it engaged when I tilted my column

Re: 72 Tilt Steering Column Rebuild Parts

I bought a total rebuilt column from kevs classics (member) and I can't imagine a new one from factory being and better than what he did. It's nice.
I don't know if he sells parts but maybe look him up.

Re: 72 Tilt Steering Column Rebuild Parts

As others have said you probably can't find all the parts in one place. I think I ordered from at least 3 different vendors. Mine was a Van tilt that I converted which consisted of moving the Neutral safety switch.
